Heroes, Criminals, and Heroes Operating As Criminals: Astonishing X-men #15

The following is my review of Astonishing X-men #15, which was posted on PopMatters.com.

In principle, being a superhero is simple. You find criminals, you fight them, and you defeat them. If you can cooperate with the authorities along the way, then that's a nice bonus. When heroes have to operate as criminals, though, things aren't as simple. That doesn't just apply to vigilantes like Batman and the Punisher, who overtly operate outside the law. Sometimes, a superhero has to function in an environment where they're branded a criminal for the wrong reasons.

That is Alex Summers' situation in Astonishing X-men. Now that he's not inverted anymore from the events of AXIS, he's attempting to rebuild his superhero credibility. His timing is actually really good, in some respects. With both his brother, Cyclops, and Captain America also having to salvage their reputations due to events like Secret Empire and Avengers vs. X-men, he's following ongoing trend among heroes. With the way things play out, however, he's going in the wrong direction and it's not entirely his fault.

Matthew Rosenberg and Greg Land give Havok plenty of opportunities to channel his brother's leadership skills. He manages to assemble a new team of X-men to carry out heroics on their own terms. It's not exactly a team of A-list heavy hitters, though. Between Warpath's attitude in Weapon X and Colossus still recovering from his failed wedding in X-men Gold #30, Havok needs more than just leadership to get them on the same page.

The underlying plot of Astonishing X-men #15 starts off simple. The Reavers are on the loose again and the X-men usually don't have many qualms about fighting Reavers. However, some major complications emerge that would hinder Captain America on his best day. These aren't the traditional, mutant-hunting Reavers the X-men are used to. They're now directly sponsored by the government and operating under the guise of law enforcement. Given the government's tenuous history with policing mutants, it's only shocking that they didn't resort to killer cyborgs sooner.

This immediately puts Havok and his new team are already behind the curve. Their confrontation with these state-sanctioned Reavers goes so badly that even Kitty Pryde has dissociated the X-men from Alex's team. Logistically speaking, they can't even call themselves X-men. In the eyes of both the law and their friends, they're not superheroes operating as criminals. They're just criminals.

This isn't just bad press like the kind Spider-Man deals with every other day. Officially, Havok's team fight and evade government agents. That's both frustrating and jarring because it subverts the X-men's traditional approach to battles. Like Sentinels or evil clones crafted by Sinister, the Reavers are the kinds of enemies that X-men usually battle without a second thought. It's almost like a reflex akin to Captain America saluting the flag or Deadpool making a dirty joke.

The difference this time is that the Reavers are sanctioned by the government. It's not entirely a mutual partnership. The Reavers, led by Donald Pierce, make it abundantly clear that this partnership was imposed. They didn't cooperate with the government out of civic duty. They were essentially drafted into serving and Havok doesn't find that out until it's too late.

This creates an unusual, but interesting backdrop to the conflict. There's no mind control or inverted personalities at work here. The only alteration to the X-men/Reaver clash is that the Reavers are now operating under the whim of the authorities. Even if they do it unwillingly, they're still technically government operatives and Havok's team fought them. From a legal perspective, they assaulted agents of law enforcement. That's not what heroes do. That's what criminals do.

It's less about the ethics of heroism and more about the bureaucracy surrounding it. Any team of heroes, be they X-men or Avengers, can take down all the cyborg assassins they want. Both the public and those in government will gladly cheer them on. However, as soon as those same cyborg assassins start operating with the government's seal of approval, those cheers turned to outrage.

It puts Havok in an unusual predicament. He wants to redeem himself. Instead, he and his new team find themselves on the wrong end of the law and public opinion. The media doesn't frame the story as the X-men heroically defeating the Reavers before they can harm innocent mutants. They report it as a group of rogue mutant terrorists battling government forces.

Technically, that's not some misleading headline on the front page of the Daily Bugle. That actually happens, forcing Havok and his new team to lay low. That doesn't work either, though. The Reavers still find them, which means they have to defend themselves. Doing so means fighting back, but that only compounds the problem because they're still fighting government officials.

It's a no-win situation for Havok. Unlike his older brother, he doesn't have a boy scout reputation to fall back on. People may question a news story that claims Captain America sucker-punched a police officer, but they're less inclined to doubt that Cyclops' less capable brother did something awful, especially after being inverted for so long. He even acknowledges how bad it gets, escaping to a bar frequented by other colorful criminals. It seems every conceivable force is working against Havok's efforts to redeem himself and for once, that's not just brooding.

It's not completely hopeless. Rosenberg never lets the tone of the story get too bleak. Havok still gets a chance to do his brother proud, hatching a plan towards the end that requires him to embrace his new criminal connotations to some extent. It's bold, but fitting approach. Given how the plot is almost framed, it feels necessary.

That also feels like a flaw, of sorts, because neither Havok nor his team really have much choice along the way. There's never a sense that they have any agency in how they impact the plot. The same goes for the Reavers, as well. Having that government label really limits their agenda to serving whoever has the right emblems on their uniform.

Even with those limits, Astonishing X-men #15 succeeds in presenting Havok with a daunting, yet novel challenge on his path to redemption. Just forming a new team of X-men and following his brother's example isn't enough. He has to operate as a criminal in order to become the hero he wants to be. His brother would be proud, but probably just as frustrated.

Final Score: 7 out of 10

Sexy Side-Project: Havok and X-23's One-Night Stand

It’s the middle of summer. It’s hot. It’s humid. We all feel sweaty and sticky after just a minute outside and parked cars might as well be ovens. In other words, it’s the perfect time of year for another sexy side-project!

I’m still forging ahead with X-men Supreme. I’m preparing the X-men for a cosmic arc that will offer a badly needed reprieve from the doom and gloom of the X-men comics right now. However, while cosmic stories are plenty fun, there’s still room for something sexy on the side. When it’s this hot and muggy out, why not throw a little something sexy into the mix?

Once again, I’m adding in some uncut material to the world of X-men Supreme. I’ve already explored plenty of “unrated” moments between couples like Cyclops/Phoenix, Wolverine/Storm, and Iceman/Kitty Pryde (which I wrote before Iceman came out as gay in the comics, mind you). However, the moment I chose for this story isn’t between an established romance. It’s not even between a couple that have dated or had a meaningful interaction in X-men Supreme to date. Instead, this story is about a single, one-night stand between two characters who have played major roles in this fanfiction series to date. These are two characters who don’t have much of a fan base and will never hook up in the comics, but here in X-men Supreme, they can have one sexy night together.

Those two characters in question are Havok and X-23. Yes, I’m talking about these two.

Why them? Well, ignoring for a moment that you don’t need many reasons for a one-night stand, these are two characters who walked a similar path in X-men Supreme. They’re both runaways who lived on the streets for a while. They’re both fighters and survivors of harsh circumstances. They’ve both endured heavy losses and hardships, albeit in different ways. They’ve both had major impacts on X-men Supreme at some point. For that reason, along with the added incentive of being young and horny, I think they’re perfect for a one-night stand.

This hidden moment within the vast sea that is X-men Supreme occurs before Havok encountered the X-men and before X-23 encountered Wolverine the first time. Specifically, it takes place shortly before the District X arc. It unfolds over the course of a single night and for all intents and purposes, it may be the most meaningful interaction that Havok and X-23 have. Both will be showing up in X-men Supreme in other stories. However, this moment is theirs to share.

In the middle of summer, I like to think my sexy side projects supplement the heat in all the right ways. I have more in the works. They’re still pending. When I’m ready to post them, I’ll make an announcement. When I’m close to finishing, I’ll drop a few hints on Twitter. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this. Stay cool in the summer heat, but stay sexy as hell. Nuff said!

X-men Supreme Reflections: Alex Summers is LIVE!

The X-men Supreme fanfiction series is once again in the eye of a storm. The world of X-men is in between volumes. The dramatic end to X-men Supreme Volume 3: Ashes of Hope is becoming an increasingly distant memory while the beginning of X-men Supreme Volume 4 continues to draw closer! I never try to plan too far ahead into this fanfiction series because I want to ensure some degree of flexibility. However, I do try to organize each volume of X-men Supreme ahead of time so that some of the key details are already in place. By the time I finished X-men Supreme Issue 71: Election Day, I already had the first issue of Volume 4 planned out in intimate detail. And as I've been working on X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 3, I've refined those details to a point where I'm ready for Volume 4 whenever the time comes! However, my primary focus continues to be on finishing X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 3.

As I've said before, this fanfiction series has placed a heavy emphasis on family drama since it began. Historically, X-men comics have utilized much more family dynamics and romantic conflicts compared to other comics and that goes for DC comics, Marvel, and other publishers. Part of the appeal is that these are conflicts people can relate to. That's why I feel the conflict between Alex Summers and his brother, Cyclops, is so compelling. I intended from the very early stages of X-men Supreme to have the relationship between the Summers brother be damaged and volatile. We know Cyclops's side of the story because he had an entry in X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 2. But as is often the case in X-men, there are two sides to every story and now it's time for Havok to have his! As such, I think it's a fitting way to end X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 3!

X-men Supreme Reflections: Alex Summers

With the end of X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 3, this fanfiction series is just a little more closer to the beginning of X-men Supreme Volume 4. However, I'm afraid to say that readers will have to wait just a little bit longer to see the next saga of X-men Supreme unfold. At the end of X-men Supreme Volume 2: War Powers, I did an extra long special issue of X-men Supreme called X-men Supreme Issue 0: Revelation X. It was an X-men Supreme story that was detached from the main series in that it took place before the events of X-men Supreme Volume 1: Mutant Revolution. Well I got some pretty positive feedback from that entry so I've decided to do another one! This one won't take place in the past though. It'll take place in a gap of time between X-men Supreme Volume 3 and X-men Supreme Volume 4. Think of it a self-contained adventure that gives readers a solid X-men Supreme story without having to read the whole series! I can't divulge too many details right now, but I'll make a full announcement in a week! So stay tuned to this website and the X-men Supreme Official Blog.

I'm very excited about the future of X-men Supreme. There are many more stories I want to tell, but the only way to ensure I do those stories correctly is if I continue to get feedback from the readers that support this fanfiction series. I know that X-men Supreme Reflections don't typically get as much feedback, but I still strongly encourage everyone to take the time to review X-men Supreme Reflections and every other issue of this fanfiction series! Either post it in the comments section or contact me directly. Thanks as always to everyone who has supported X-men Supreme. I hope it continues. Until next time, take care and best wishes! Excelsior!

X-men Supreme Reflections: Alex Summers PREVIEW and New Commission!

Ever since I started the X-men Supreme fanfiction series, I've tried to give plenty of weight to the more personal issues that the X-men face. Marvel comics has given me plenty to work with in that regard. That's why I often focus on relationships and family dramas. I've already explored the many conflicts between Mystique, Rogue, and Nightcrawler. I've also explored the most famous love triangle in X-men with Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine. But one personal conflict that I've only recently begun to explore involves Cyclops's younger brother, Alex Summers. He was introduced in the District X arc as a strong, confrontational fighter that was capable of leading other mutants into conflict, much like his brother. But unlike his brother, he was far more brash and hot-headed. This culminated with his departure from District X and his joining Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants.

In the X-men Supreme fanfiction series, Havok is a young, immature character with with many unresolved issues. He despises his brother and the world that rejected him. But like everyone else in X-men Supreme, he has a reason for being the way he is. I've offered a few hints in this fanfiction series as to where he and Cyclops diverged. They walked the same road, but Havok chose a very different path. What could have led him to chose that path? Now that he's part of the Brotherhood of Mutants on the island nation of Genosha, he's poised to have a very significant impact on the future of the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. As such, he's a very fitting focus for the final entry of X-men Supreme Reflections: Volume 3! Expect to learn more about this renegade teenager who has thrust himself into the largest conflicts in X-men Supreme. As always, I've prepared a brief preview here on this website and an extended preview of what you can expect from the life and story of Alex Summers.

When Scott finally awoke from his coma, there was already another challenge before me. Since there was no telling how injured my older brother was at the time, the state wanted to separate us. I was perfectly healthy even if I was traumatized and the social worker assigned to our case wanted to get me into a foster home. This time I didn’t stand for it. I fought back, saying I wasn’t going to leave my brother. He was family and that was it. At one point they tried to drag me away. I kept on fighting, but not with your typical kicking and screaming. I actually bit the social worker and poked her in the eye. That left such an impact the social worker quit our case and let someone else take over. This time it was someone smart enough to keep me and Scott together.

My brother proved pretty damn tough and made a full recovery…physically anyways. Once the hospital cleared him, an old army friend of my dad’s had us taken to this special orphanage in New York City for the children of veterans. It wasn’t your typical orphanage at all. This place was operating under the US military’s dollar so we had it pretty nice compared to other orphans…nice being another relative term. It didn’t even call it an orphanage. They called it a “group home” to be politically correct. It basically had all the essentials: food, clothes, shelter, and a warm bed. While it may have been comfortable, it certainly wasn’t what you would call a cheerful environment. A lot of these kids were pretty damaged. Scott and I were in a league of our own.

Before we even got used to the place, I encountered a major challenge that would plague me for the next decade or so. Once we moved in, my brother took it upon himself to baby me through this rough transition. It’s like he became dad all of the sudden. He never left my side, always trying to fight my battles for me so that I wouldn’t have to. That would have been great if I was still weak and feeble. In a ways I was, but what really got on my nerves was that he never gave me room to grow. When we started off, we were in this fight together and we couldn’t have been closer. Over time, this unofficial family structure that Scott and only Scott imposed drove us apart.

Years went by and it got easier at a painfully slow rate. Every so often, we would get some potential foster parents. We even stayed with a couple of families briefly, but being young and angry it wasn’t easy calling someone else my parents. It was sort of my way of showing Scott and everybody around me that I was a fighter. I didn’t need to be propped up because I was young and weak. I admit now that I was probably a little overly aggressive back then. It’s not like I didn’t have reason. I was nowhere near as disciplined as my big brother, but I could tell he was fuming just as much as I was. He never showed it even when he probably should have. Between the two of us, we were unadoptable.

Those failed foster families really didn’t bring me and Scott any closer. As I got older he got more obsessive. It was like he wanted to hold my hand through everything and not let me grow on my own. I called him out on this so many times and his response was never all that reasonable. Simply because he was older and he took it upon himself to look after me meant that somehow he had the authority. I didn’t understand it and didn’t care to. He also didn’t let me return the favor. When he turned ten he started getting these headaches and from time to time, his eyes would flash red. I wasn’t scared, but I was worried. Scott’s standard response was to just brush it off, wearing sunglasses to cover them up. He would never talk about it with me. He didn’t want to worry me. Except I’m his brother, I deserve to worry even if I was younger.

When I wasn’t clashing with Scott, I was clashing with pretty much everyone else. The people that ran the orphanage treated me like I was sick. They kept trying to counsel me and I always got so angry at them. I probably came off as a little brat to them, but they would probably react the same way if someone was always treating them like they were weak when you were fighting every day to be stronger. Something had to give and that’s when fate threw me and Scott a wildcard.

In addition to the preview, I also have another exciting update in the pics section, courtesy of our old friend Brian Brinlee. He has contributed yet another beautiful commission to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. This time he took one of the most sinister scenes in X-men Supreme Volume 2: War Powers and brought it to life both literally and figuratively. The scene came from the pages of Issue 33: Sinister Intent Part 2. It is a scene that marks the X-men's first confrontation with Mr. Sinister. He abducted Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Rogue and had them at his mercy for what would be the first, but certainly not the last confrontation in X-men Supreme! I think Mr. Brinlee did another awesome job and I encourage everyone to check it out!

I know in the previous two volumes of X-men Supreme Reflections I've focused on five characters. Well, I decided to go a different route for X-men Supreme Reflections Volume 3. I know there are many characters to explore and there are some I do intend to get to eventually. However, at this point in the story I feel four will be sufficient. And with the events of X-men Supreme Volume 3: Ashes of Hope still reverberating, I'm eager to get started on X-men Supreme Volume 4! While I know X-men Supreme Reflections doesn't garner as much feedback, I still strongly encourage everyone to provide feedback in whatever way they can. Either post your comments in the comments section or contact me directly with your feedback. Either way is fine. As always, I deeply appreciate those who have supported the X-men Supreme fanfiction series and continue to do so! Until next time, take care and best wishes. Excelsior!
