X-men Supreme + PopMatters.com = Major Announcement

Got some exciting news to announce! No, Marvel hasn’t offered me a job and no, Scarlett Johannsen still hasn’t responded to my marriage proposal. But hopefully, this will improve the future of X-men Supreme. I have received an offer from the fine folks at PopMatters.com and they were sufficiently intrigued by my passionate, and sometimes obscene, reviews that they have offered me a chance to write regular comic book reviews for them. So I won’t just be another faceless fanboy posting his comic book rants on some obscure blog. My work will actually be posted to a regular website! To say I’m excited about this would be like saying Power Girl’s tits are just average.

I rest my case.
So because of this opportunity and the maybe foolish hope that it will help both this blog and the official X-men Supreme website, the format for my reviews will change. I understand I spend a lot of time ranting and raving, sometimes going off on complete tangents that recount the horrors of high school or why ex-girlfriends are living incarnations of Satan. For these reviews, I’ll have to be more concise. So they’ll be shorter and edited by the fine folks at PopMatters.com for widespread public consumption. Hopefully, that means less spelling mistakes and punctuation errors. In other words, suck it, grammar Nazis!

I’ll also have to wait a while to post my reviews until they’re analyzed by people way smarter than me. I know I’ve been pretty good about posting my reviews regularly, but now I’m trying to make them more professional and hopefully more awesome. I started doing reviews just as something to help provide extra content for my blog and for my X-men Supreme website. I’ve come to enjoy it so much that it seems as though some people are genuinely fond of them. For that I thank those people and I hope they continue to enjoy my distinct critical style under PopMatters.com.

As for those of you who don’t give a damn about the hard work I put into my reviews and care only about the images I post, I want to say tough shit, but I have too much love for those people as well. Some don’t get a chance to read the books I review and rely on my reviews for insight and updates. With that in mind, here’s how I’m going to try working this blog from now on.

Every week, I’ll pick some comics to review and work with PopMatters.com to post it. And once PopMatters.com posts it, I’ll also post it on my blog, possibly with a few extra tweaks and rents. In addition, I’ll create separate posts that I’ll call “Scanned Thoughts.” It’ll basically post some of the images that I usually use in my reviews and add a few quick blurbs. Like if in a new issue of Uncanny X-men there’s a page where Emma Frost and Dazzler strip down to their underwear and have an oil wrestling match, I’ll post it and make a few quips about it. But I won’t be as thorough as I was with my previous reviews. I’ll save that for the actual insight that I’ll post in PopMatters.com.

Now if this shit doesn’t work, I’ll tweak it. If someone has a better idea, I’ll listen. But there are only so many hours in the day and I can’t write two reviews for the same damn comic. Maybe if I had Sage’s brain and the Flash’s speed, I could. But for now, I’ve got to work within my mortal constraints and I think this is the best way to do it.

Almost as excited as Cyclops. Almost.
So once again, I thank the wonderful people at PopMatters.com for giving me this opportunity! Hope this is a bold new phase for X-men Supreme. Excelsior!

X-men Supreme Issue 76: Crowns of Tyrants is LIVE!

The weather is heating up outside and so are the events of the X-men Supreme fanfiction series! The X-men and the Brotherhood of Mutants for that matter are about to come face-to-face with a new force to be reckoned with. With Robert Kelly now President of the United States, it was only a matter of time before he made his first bold move in the ongoing conflict between humans and mutants. Well that time has arrived and the X-men Supreme fanfiction series will never be the same because of it.

It all relates to the two new characters I introduced in X-men Supreme Issue 75: Renegade, General Nathan Grimshaw and Captain Jack Freeman. These two men entered the conflict unexpectedly, but they have their own history in the world of X-men Supreme. Like many of the other characters I've introduced in this fanfiction series, like Thunderbird, they have their own unique history that ties them to the ongoing events in X-men Supreme. That history is about to be revealed, but more importantly it will give them reasons to do what they're about to do. And standing in their way is the full force of Magneto and his mutant supporters on Genosha. General Grimshaw and Captain Freeman are playing a dangerous game, but to what end? Read on and see for yourself!

X-men Supreme Issue 76: Crowns of Tyrants

I've also managed to squeeze in another update to the pics section for the second week in a row. I'm always trying to keep the official X-men Supreme website up to date with new content. This time I've added some images to the official section for Jean Grey and Phoenix counterpart. She has become a major player in the recent comics again so I think it's appropriate that I update her section. And please remember that I'm always open to posting commissioned artwork to anyone willing to submit it. If you're interested, please contact me. If not, enjoy Jean Grey's cosmic beauty!

Jean Grey Pics

Phoenix Pics

This latest issue is a very important shift for the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. General Grimshaw and Captain Freeman will change the scope and tone of the series moving forward. They won't be the only ones contributing, but they will play a significant role and for that reason it's very important that readers take the time to tell me what they think. I understand that every fanfiction series takes a risk when using original characters. My intent is to make General Grimshaw and Captain Jack Freeman characters that will add a unique touch to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. But the most important part is that X-men Supreme still carry the feel of something you would see from Marvel comics. So please be sure to provide feedback so I can refine this series to be the most awesome fanfiction series it can be. Either post it in the comments section of the issue or contact me directly. Either way is fine. Thanks again to all those who have supported the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. Until next time, take care and best wishes! Excelsior!

Cable and X-Force #9 - The Bitch is Back

In case I haven't made it abundantly clear in my many drunken rants, I like to sometimes kill a select number of brain cells that contain memories and feelings that piss me the fuck off. I've spent a good deal of my adult life trying and failing to kill most of my memories of high school and summer camp between the 5th and 6th grade. But I consider those the big issues that my therapist loves to bitch about. Some of the smaller issues that I try to suppress involve certain feelings about comics. I already made clear in previous posts how much the X-men movies and Bryan Singer pisses me off. But there's one other figure in comics that I've dedicated many reviews and many drunken rants towards shitting on like a constipated elephant. That figure has red hair, green eyes, and is NOT named Jean Grey.

Yes, I'm talking about Hope fucking Summers. I used to call her Jean rip-off, but now that O5 Jean Grey is back I'll just stick to calling her Hope fucking Summers. She's basically everything you hate in a character. She's an unoriginal, whiney, pissant little cunt who you wish Marvel would kill off in ways even more disrespectful than the ways they killed off Nightcrawler. It's not enough that she did jack fucking shit in Avengers vs. X-men. She was no mutant messiah. All she did was fucking let the Phoenix Force go. And somehow that required special training and shit? Hell, my mom could make me let go of my fucking dick just by scolding me. Since when did that shit become a power? But I digress.

It's bad enough Hope fucking Summers survived Avengers vs. X-men. Yet she kept giving me more reasons to want to take a shit on her grave. After Avengers vs. X-men, did she actually try to help the people who sacrificed everything to save her? Did she try to vouch for Cyclops after he dedicated a whole fucking island to protecting her? Fuck no! She just ditched the X-men and ran off to some private school so she could leave a 'normal' life. And low and behold, that shit wasn't enough for her so she ran off to find Cable. But he has since made it clear that he's had enough of her whiney little bitching and is busy with his new X-Force team.

Now Cable and X-Force was a series that started slow, but in recent times it has gotten a lot better. In recent issues this comic has become a compelling, eventful story involving a different kind of X-men team. And best of all, it got better without Hope fucking Summers and relied on more reasonable methods like Tabitha in a bikini or Colossus boning Domino. And while I've enjoyed these methods, in the back of my head I knew it was only a matter of time before Hope fucking Summers entered the picture again. And since I haven't killed enough brain cells to make me forget why she's a pissant little cunt, I suppose I must endure.

The story of Cable and his new team continues to unfold in Cable and X-Force #9 fresh off their little pwnage of Agent Brand and SWORD, but only to the extent that they crashed the ship they stole and left the Uncanny Avengers to comb through the wreckage. Now why would they crash a perfectly good ship? Okay, well maybe stealing a ship from Abigail Brand that was probably wired with all sorts of tracking wasn’t something they should have held onto. But whatever the reason, Cable is nowhere in sight and neither is his team. It leaves Havok and Rogue to talk about how fucked up it is how so many X-men have switched sides, including her. Never mind that some of them only switched sides because they were screwed over, but I guess with Cable it’s tougher since he did sort of fuck up a fast food chain. And what crime besides creating a global utopia with a cosmic force is worse than fucking up our ability to get cheap, unhealthy, processed food? Well if they are going to find Cable, it won’t be in this ship. They have to use other means and unfortunately those means involve asshole teenage girls with red hair and green eyes that aren’t named Jean Grey.

So here we go, the pissant little cunt is back after being MIA from the X-books for not nearly a long enough time. And surprise surprise, she’s finding new ways to be a total bitch. Remember that nice foster family that the Avengers went to so much trouble getting for her? Well like most bitchy teenage girls, she didn’t appreciate it in the slightest. And just to go the extra mile, she mind-fucked them into letting her go. She even ripped off a famous Star Wars quote. That means this little bitch hasn’t just fucked up the X-men. Now she’s shitting all over Star Wars. Is there no limit to the shit this bitch won’t taint?

Shortly after she’s done NOT showing her gratitude to two innocent people, the Uncanny Avengers show up. Naturally, they’ve been keeping tabs on her because why wouldn’t you want to keep tabs on a whiney teenage bitch that packs a full arsenal of mutant powers? They calmly and politely explain to her that they can’t let her join Cable. He’s a wanted fugitive who recently blew up a fast food warehouse, killed people, freed an alien tyrant, and stole a space ship. That’s a long list of crimes that they don’t need the so-called mutant messiah associated with.

But what’s even more remarkable and thus makes Hope even more a bitch is that she knows it’s a bad idea. She also tells them that Cable doesn’t want her to seek him out either. He’s basically cut her from his life and why shouldn’t he? He did his job and helped her be the mutant messiah in the lamest way possible by just letting the fucking Phoenix Force go. He doesn’t need to care for her anymore, but she just won’t let this shit go in the same way other teenage girls won’t let anyone share their tampons. There’s being a rebellious teenager and then there’s just being a total dick and Hope fucking Summers doesn’t even try to walk the line.

There’s not much going on here. There’s just a lot of talking. It’s just the Uncanny Avengers trying to reason with a teenage girl. They might as well try to convert Ozzy Osborne to being a fucking Mormon. To their credit, the Uncanny Avengers try to adopt a less authoritarian approach. They try to reason and empathize with Hope, telling her that she doesn’t have to get involved with this shit again. Rogue even tries to be friendly again, drawing parallels to what she went through with Mystique. She says she wants to make her own choices. But to a teenage girl that just means “I want to do whatever the fuck I want and I don’t give a shit about the consequences.” And given all the shitty things Hope fucking Summers has done to everyone who placed their faith in her, that’s even a bigger dick move than usual and this scene does nothing to make it compelling.

And she’s not done making people hate her more just yet. Remember how she mind fucked those two innocent foster parents that let her into their home and tried to give her a better life? Well where did she get such a skill? She’s got a long list of mutant powers, but she needs to pick up on them first. Well that is actually explained. During their conversation, we find out that Hope managed to ditch whoever was keeping tabs on her for the Avengers just long enough to pay a visit to the exact prison where the Purple Woman was being held. And for some reason this prison lets random teenage girls visit dangerous prisoners without question. I could list any number of ways this makes no fucking sense even in the must fucked up of justice systems. But that would just cause me to waste some perfectly good vodka. There’s nothing interesting whatsoever about Hope’s conversation with Purple Woman. She’s just there to get her power. That’s it. It’s by far the worst conjugal visit in the history of prison.

Armed with the Purple Woman’s power, Hope fucking Summers proceeds to mind fuck the Avengers into fighting each other. She even does it with an evil glare to show that she always goes the extra distance when it comes to being a bitch. So now she’s fucked over the X-men after they did everything to save her from Bastion. She’s fucked over the foster parents that lovingly let her into their home. And she’s fucked over the Avengers who gave her that home. Is there no lines this bitch won’t cross?

Again, there’s not much to this scene. Captain America and Havok fight over leadership. It’s basically the same fight we saw in the pages of Uncanny Avengers, but twenty times more awesome. Hell, I would prefer that the Red Skull was mind-fucking them more than Hope fucking Summers at this point. It’s not very action packed or compelling. It’s just some mindless bit of action in a comic that has consisted mostly of reasoning with a teenage girl. So it should come to nobody’s surprise that it devolved into an epic fail.

Rogue manages to stop the brawl before it becomes an all out dick-measuring contest and stops Hope from bolting. But rather than try to mind fuck them again, Hope employs yet another power. That obscenely contrived prison that was way too fucking lenient on visitor policies helped Hope in another way. As it just so happened, Martinique Wynegarde was being housed at that prison as well. Why was she there? And how was it that Hope knew they were there? We don’t get an explanation. That would make too much sense and as we’ve seen in every recent story involving Hope fucking Summers, making sense just isn’t a priority. So through this incredibly contrived coincidence, Hope now has the power to cast illusions.

But if Hope had the power to cast illusions all along, why the fuck didn’t she just cast an illusion to begin with so that she never had to face the Uncanny Avengers? Why go through the trouble of mind-fucking them when she knew they weren’t going to convince her? Again, that shit might have made too much fucking sense. It might have actually forced this comic to be about more than Hope fucking Summers. But again, that’s not what we get.

Showing that she has no imagination in addition to being a total bitch, she creates a fucked up illusion that consists of a sentinel with the Red Skull’s head Photoshopped on top. It makes for another short and bland action scene that is over exceedingly quickly and causes no commotion whatsoever at a crowded bus station in the middle of the fucking day. Either the scene just wasn’t that well thought out or Hope fucking Summers just mind fucked everybody to ensure she got away. And she did too. She succeeded in once again giving the finger to a group of people who tried to help her. She might as well have punched a nun in the face and taken a shit in good will donation jar because that’s the kind of bitch she is.

It makes for a very unsatisfying ending because now Hope fucking Summers has escaped and is on her way to join Cable. She’s now on a bus where she even gets recognized by some kid who saw her televised exploits earlier in the series. But again, absolutely nothing comes of it. We’re just left with a renegade Hope fucking Summers that’s now on her way to meet up with Cable and probably fuck up the awesome story that has been unfolding over the past few issues. I still want to see how that story pans out, but I know that there’s next to no chance that Hope fucking Summers won’t make it worse by being the little bitch she is.

In recent times, I’ve given the impression that I enjoy seeing the Avengers get pwned. And I do. It’s one of the many things I’ve been jerking off to lately. But like all my masturbatory habits, there is purpose behind it. I enjoyed seeing the Avengers get pwned in Uncanny X-men and All New X-men because they fucking deserved it. They were being assholes, which is pretty fucked up considering how nice their shit ended up smelling after Avengers vs. X-men. And they were being assholes in this issue too, but once again they were upstaged by a whiney little bitch named Hope fucking Summers.

There are any number of ways to fuck up a comic. Just having 22 pages showing the Hulk take a shit is one of them, but I would consider that far more entertaining than any comic that focuses on Hope fucking Summers. I knew that this bitch could upset the hot streak that Cable and X-Force has been on lately. But once again, the little bitch outdid herself. She actually found a way to make me hate her fucking guts even more with this issue. She actually made it so I couldn’t get a boner watching the Avengers get pwned again. And there’s just no excuse for that. Ever.

The biggest flaw with this comic is that it didn’t even follow the plot that has been unfolding over the past several issues, aside from addressing the crashed ship that Cable stole from Abigail Brand. I was enjoying that plot. I didn’t need to see a whole fucking issue dedicated to Hope fucking Summers being an even bigger pissant little cunt. That’s all this issue was. Hope just wasn’t satisfied with ditching the X-men that did so much to save her and not doing a damn thing for Cyclops, who placed all his faith in her. She was given a nice, simple life on a silver platter that most teenagers would kill for and even more teenagers take for granted. And she didn’t just throw that shit away. She mind-fucked the innocent people trying to help her and completely gave the finger to Cable’s wishes, who has made it clear that he’s had enough of her whiney ass. There’s being an ungrateful little bitch and then there’s just being a bitch. There aren’t enough crazy glue laced tampons in the world for this little cunt.

It wasn’t all flaws though. At times the conversation between Hope and the Uncanny Avengers was compelling. The dialog was strong and so was the artwork. And as much as it makes me want to shove an ice pick in my balls, I knew Hope fucking Summers was going to get involved in Cable’s shit again and this did help set it up. But it did so without even hinting at what Cable and his team were doing now that they had pissed of Agent Brand. There was no balance and it all just amounted to the Uncanny Avengers failing to convince a bitchy teenage girl to listen to them. I mean they might as well have told a story about me attending an AA meeting because the whole premise was flawed to begin with.

I don’t want to throw Cable and X-Force into the shredder just because of Hope fucking Summers. This issue is an anomaly in a series that has been getting progressively better. And one shitty issue with one shitty character shouldn’t ruin it. Hope fucking Summers comes dangerously close, but doesn’t succeed. Cable and X-Force is still a viable series, but this is not a viable issue. Because of her bullshit, I can only give this issue a 1.5 out of 5. Other than some emotional dialog, there’s nothing memorable in this comic except a teenage girl not listening to people who know better. In other words, you can spend a day in my old high school and get the exact same shit that this comic offered, minus the wedgies. Nuff said!

All New X-men #12 - Awesome With Oversights

Some ideas sound great on paper. Rocket skates, hover boards, and bacon flavored condoms come to mind. But they don't always work out in real life. I would know because I still have bite marks on my dick. You could say that about time travel stories as well. The concept of bringing the Original Five X-men back from the past sounds awesome on paper, if not for those precious moments before the blow wears off. But making a whole comic series about it? That sounds a bit tougher, even on paper. Yet sometimes even the shit that doesn't sound like it could work on paper turns out to be awesome. Rocket skates may be dangerous, but if you're willing to brave some burn marks on your ass and some busted ear drums they're a metric fuck ton of fun, especially when drunk.

Brian Michael Bendis has proven with nearly a dozen issues of All New X-men that the concept of bringing the Original Five X-men back from the past can work as more than just a simple crossover arc that consists mostly of Jean Grey looking deadpanned after finding out she died multiple times and some creepy hairy Canadian is trying to bone her. He's turned it into a genuinely compelling story full of teen drama, personal growth, and heart. It's one of the few books I have to read with a box of tissues that I don't exclusively use for mopping up semen. Moments like Jean Grey hugging Kitty Pryde or Angel leaving the Original Five has genuine heart. It has made All New X-men the top tier X-book week in and week out. It doesn't come with rocket skates, but I guess that would be asking for too much.

Among this book's many strengths is its sense of progression. Bendis has managed to avoid some of the mistakes many writers have made in the past, namely starting up side-plots and not giving enough fucks to build from them (I'm looking at you Stan Humprhies's Uncanny X-Force). All New X-men juggles many different plots, but Bendis has done a great job of keeping it concise. The past few issues have focused primarily on Cyclops's new Revolutionary team visiting the Jean Grey Institute, doing some recruiting, and generally pissing off Wolverine.

While they succeeded at all three, another plot has been unfolding behind the scenes. This one involves Mystique, the woman who will give you a boner and kill you in your sleep but you don't give a damn because she's so fucking hot. She made her presence known a while back when she played with O5 Cyclops's hormones and encouraged him to piss Wolverine off even more. All the while, she has been formulating her own little plan that involves freeing Lady Mastermind, robbing banks, and using the O5 X-men as scapegoats. In terms of evil plans, she's the only one who can succeed and be damn sexy while doing it. I guess it's her way of saying "Suck it, Emma Frost!" And she might actually mean that in more than one way.

But this kind of bullshit can't go unnoticed forever. So now that Angel's defection from the team has been finalized, the team is ready to deal with Mystique. Unfortunately, her using the O5's image to fuck with people has drawn the attention of Havok and the Uncanny Avengers. They're already pissed that Beast is date raping the space time continuum. They can't be too thrilled when the O5 seems to be robbing banks.

The previous issue ended with the O5 confronting the Uncanny Avengers, but Havok didn't get a chance to be a bigger douche yet. All New X-men #12 gives him that chance, but amazingly he doesn’t take advantage of it. Despite having just reviewed Cyclops’s speech from Australia in the previous page, he actually avoids being a massive tool when he sees his time displaced brother. And rather than bitch and moan at what a dick he’s grown up to be, he actually hugs him in a nice moment that you don’t get between siblings when Christmas presents or weed aren’t involved. It’s still a tense confrontation between the Uncanny Avengers and the O5 X-men, but Havok manages to keep them from attacking one another. That may be the nicest thing he’s done since the last time he went down on Polaris.

While the two teams star each other down like a crack head at a fresh line of blow, O5 Cyclops and Havok step aside to have a nice moment. The Uncanny Avengers even let Havok have this moment so he can reconnect with his brother as he was before he became a wanted fugitive for being in the wrong place when Tony Stark shot a big fucking gun against a cosmic force. Once again, Bendis flaunts his knack for dramatic scenes the way a stripper flaunts a new boob job. There are still some disconnects between them. O5 Cyclops still carries on as if he didn’t kill Charles Xavier, but Havok isn’t having it. He makes clear that he still blames Cyclops. Does it make him a douche-bag? Maybe on some levels, but he doesn’t belabor the issue so I give him credit for that.

But that’s not the point of the conversation. Havok, like a number of others who are concerned about the integrity of the space time continuum and not named Hank McCoy, urge O5 Cyclops that he and his team have to go back to the past. We’ve seen this argument before, but O5 Cyclops adds some extra drama to the mix when he claims there’s nothing for him to go back to. And he’s right. If he goes back to the past, he’ll just end up a guy who loses the love of his life, kills Charles Xavier, and becomes a wanted fugitive for some bullshit reasons. I think given the circumstances, he has every right to tell Father Time to go fuck himself.

It’s a tense moment for the two brothers that could easily turn into an argument that even a Mario Kart tournament couldn’t solve. But they probably haven’t taken into account that the rest of the team and the Uncanny Avengers are still in a bit of a standoff. And as we’ve seen in recent clashes between the Avengers and the X-men, it doesn’t take much for shit to go south.

And once again the trigger is a teenage girl with red hair and green eyes who is not named Hope fucking Summers. O5 Jean Grey, who has already gotten into trouble for sensing thoughts she shouldn’t sense, picks up on some stray thoughts from the Scarlet Witch. Now it’s worth noting here that in the time the O5 come from, the Scarlet Witch is still a member of the Brotherhood of Mutants. Now she’s a fucking Avenger? That alone is confusing enough. But what makes O5 Jean Grey (and anyone else with marginal critical thinking skills) lose her fucking shit is when she senses that this woman is guilty of fucking mutant genocide.

Yes, she was under the influence of Dr. Doom. But Cyclops was under the influence of the Phoenix Force and that didn’t stop the entire Marvel universe from condemning his ass. I guess it’s different for the Scarlet Witch because…actually, I have no fucking clue. I also have no fucking clue how O5 Jean Grey didn’t pick up on this from Beast’s memories, but I guess if she only got the memories of her adult life that didn’t include the events of House of M. And I have to believe that if Jean Grey’s adult self was there, she would probably react the same just because Cyclops ended up in jail while the Scarlet Witch got to be a fucking Avenger.

And as we’ve seen in previous issues of All New X-men, O5 Jean Grey throws a hell of a temper tantrum and she doesn’t even need PMS as an excuse. Rather than try to understand what she just sensed from the Scarlet Witch’s thoughts like a reasonable adult, she overacts like the teenager she is and attacks both her and the Avengers. And she’s not subtle about it either. She’s fucking Jean Grey. Fighting the Avengers and an army of sentinels is basically a picnic activity for her.

But not everything about her teenage reaction is completely irrational if you can believe that. As she’s attacking, she asks the Avengers how the fuck they could possibly let the Scarlet Witch be an Avenger. I mean they threw Cyclops in jail for killing one guy and making the world into a utopia. The Scarlet Witch killed multiple Avengers and nearly wiped out an entire fucking species. Yet they just shrug their shoulders? I know I’ve pointed this out in my drunken rants over Avengers vs. X-men, but I think it’s worth harping on. The Avengers don’t even try to explain it. They just work on settling O5 Jean Grey from her hissy fit and remind them that they came for reasons beyond just how their presence is making Albert Einstein roll over in his grave and making Stephen Hawking sicker than he already is.

That reason is actually something that has been unfolding in multiple issues of All New X-men lately. It involves Mystique, the shape-shifting deviant that makes up a good 62 percent of my masturbation fantasies, and her devious plan to steal a fuckton of money and have everyone blame the X-men. While the Uncanny Avengers are wasting their time getting answers from the O5 and getting their ass kicked by Jean Grey, she and her deadly team of Sabretooth and Lady Mastermind are pulling another heist in London. Tea time is being interrupted. Monocles are being shattered. It seems like a similar scene to what we saw in previous issues.

But Bendis throws a new twist into the mix. While Mystique and her team succeed in this latest heist, Lady Mastermind points out that she doesn’t think her plan consists entirely of just stealing enough money to buy their way out of their bullshit. She thinks she has a bigger plan. But even more shocking, she thinks Mystique actually cares about mutant affairs. Now given that Mystique has been turned into this total fucking sociopath in recent years, that’s a welcome shift. It makes me feel less guilty about jerking off to her. It also hints that maybe she wasn’t being completely dishonest when she was toying with O5 Cyclops in a previous issue. That means there might actually be some layers to Mystique’s plot and I’m all for that, especially my penis.

Back with the Uncanny Avengers and O5 X-men, they finally manage to calm O5 Jean down long enough to show them the shit they’ve been accused of. Captain America plays some news feeds of people claiming the O5 X-men attacked, robbed a bank, and killed people. Wolverine makes it clear that it’s total bullshit and after finding out that Mystique has been fucking with them lately, they know who to blame. I’m not sure if blaming a shape-shifter is a legal defense in the Marvel universe, but I would be shocked if it wasn’t more popular than the insanity defense. O5 Cyclops doesn’t want to believe it at first, but I think that’s his penis talking more than his common sense. Naturally, it doesn’t take much convincing from Wolverine that the O5 are innocent. But Captain America makes it clear that they can’t have this kind of shitty PR, especially when they’re trying to make a joint Avengers/X-men team. And considering the shitty job they’ve been doing in Uncanny Avengers, it’s a valid concern.

Now with a threat like Mystique and the potential PR backlash, you would think the Uncanny Avengers would actually stick around to help them deal with this shit. It would make sense and fall under the purview of working together with mutants. Rogue even goes on a little rant at how there are no mutant or human problems. There are just problems. Yet after just hearing from Wolverine that Mystique is involved, the Uncanny Avengers just up and leave. They don’t offer any help. They just trust Wolverine and his school to fix it.

Maybe I smoked one too many joints before reading this (which is a remote possibility at best), but doesn’t that just completely defeat the purpose of the Uncanny Avengers? This is a mutant issue involving a dangerous mutant foe who has done some pretty fucked up shit to hurt mutants. Yet the Uncanny Avengers don’t help? I know Mystique isn’t the Red Skull, but she’s as dangerous as she is sexy. Brian Michael Bendis has done a great job since this story began of avoiding the pitfalls of Avengers vs. X-men, namely actually trying to do shit that makes sense. Well this doesn’t make any fucking sense. While we do get one last nice moment between O5 Cyclops and Havok, the whole premise of the Uncanny Avengers showing up just to leave is a big fucking plot hole in a series that hasn’t had many.

However, that isn’t the only gaping oversight. After the Uncanny Avengers leave, the O5, Kitty Pryde, and Wolverine get back to the original mission they began in the last issue, which was to find Mystique. But along the way, O5 Jean Grey reiterates how fucked up it is that the Scarlett Witch is allowed to be an Avenger after the shit she did. And Wolverine gives the same answer that every adult gives to teenagers when they make a perfectly valid point, “It’s complicated.” No, quantum physics is complicated. Letting the Scarlet Witch stay on the Avengers after the shit she did is simply fucked up.

But the big oversight here is how neither O5 Jean Grey or O5 Cyclops point out the utter hypocrisy of letting the Scarlet Witch stay on the Avengers while Cyclops is a fugitive. It has been pointed out before that the Scarlet Witch is guilty of way more death and destruction than Cyclops was. He killed one guy after trying to create a global utopia. The Scarlet Witch nearly wiped out a species while killing multiple Avengers. Yet they want to throw Cyclops in jail? After he gave a speech in the last issue at how he was not in a clear state of mind? There are oversights like forgetting to draw Superman’s red underwear and then there are oversights like this. And in a series that sets the bar so high, this is pretty egregious.

Maybe at some point someone will point out the hypocrisy surrounding the treatment of Cyclops compared to the Scarlet Witch. After their previous encounter with Cyclops, I have a feeling that won’t happen. The story is already moving to more immediate concerns, namely Mystique. At the rate she’s going, she’ll have enough money to buy the Avengers. The last page shows just how much money she’s amassed while the X-men are neck deep in all this dramatic shit. She could basically give every stripper in the world an Ivy League education now. And I expect she’s not going to give it up easily, especially if it means fucking with Wolverine and the O5 X-men.

This issue accomplished something that I didn’t think was possible anymore. It went an entire issue without Havok coming off as a colossal douche-bag. I know. I’m just as shocked as everyone else. But Brian Michael Bendis pulled it off and instead made the Scarlet Witch a total fucking douche-bag. Even though the Scarlet Witch is hotter and Marvel generally avoids making beautiful woman look bad, I still say this is a win. It added to Bendis’s ongoing streak of focusing on more personal, dramatic plots rather than just have the X-men fight giant robots. If you want that shit, there are only a trillion other X-men stories that follow that premise. This issue and All New X-men gives readers something different and more personal without it becoming a Twilight rip-off.

This issue succeeded in all the usual ways that All New X-men has succeed in previous issues. It continued the unfolding drama surrounding the Original Five that began in the previous issue. It also added some new twists to the ongoing side-plot with Mystique. The idea of her actually giving a damn about mutant affairs makes her much more compelling (and sexier for that matter) than just some sociopath who wants to bath in money like one of Donald Trump’s trophy wives. But unlike previous issues, this issue fell short in a number of areas.

I don’t want to belabor the Scarlet Witch issue, but I think this is one instance where an already emotional teenage girl actually underreacted. O5 Jean Grey clearly points out that it was the Scarlet Witch who nearly wiped out the mutant race. And if she did a quick scan of Wikipedia on the events of Avengers vs. X-men, she would know that it was her bullshit that led to Charles Xavier getting killed in the first place. So what if she was under the influence of Dr. Doom. Cyclops was under the influence of Dark Phoenix and they threw his ass in a fucking jail cell and dedicate a good chunk of their energy to bitching about him. Some here might want to whine about circumstances, but I think O5 Jean Grey’s reaction as perfectly valid. And for once, Bendis made a massive oversight in nobody pointing out that the treatment of the Scarlett Witch and the treatment of Cyclops was completely fucked. I was waiting for someone to point that shit out, but they never did. And that is like a big ass piss stain on your pants just before you’re about to give a speech. It can’t be ignored.

Another point that I feel requires less belaboring is how the Uncanny Avengers just showed up and fucking left. They didn’t stick around to deal with the Mystique issue. All they did was show up, get their asses kicked by O5 Jean Grey, and up and leave once they were assured that these whole robberies were just Mystique fucking around. I get that Captain America puts up with Wolverine’s bullshit. But it was stated outright that the point of the Uncanny Avengers was to address both human and mutant problems. And the way they handled this problem amounted to “Fuck it, let Wolverine’s people deal with it.”

While these holes are difficult to overlook, the dramatic moment between O5 Cyclops and Havok was still a nice touch. We know we won’t be getting a moment like that with revolutionary Cyclops anytime soon. It’s a nice reminder that at one point, Cyclops and Havok actually got along as brothers. In the Marvel universe where we get whole fucking movies devoted to siblings being at each other’s throats, that’s saying something. So between the holes and the drama, I give All New X-men #12 a 3.5 out of 5. I wish I could give it a higher score, but I don’t give much leeway when it comes to oversight. Unless you’re a police officer willing to overlook the bag of weed under my seat during a traffic stop, I have strict standards. I owe it to the fine readers of this blog for which I get so drunk to craft these reviews. Nuff said!

Marvel Heroes Review - A Truly Marvelous MMO

I don't attempt to hide my appetite for various vices on this blog. I don't shy away from fucking up various organs if it means I can get a good buzz and maybe get laid. But I know my limits. I know there is only so much shit the body and brain can take. That's why I have avoided getting hooked on a massively multiplayer online game, or MMO as they're called. I've heard many a horror stories about people treating MMOs like crack to the point where they would gladly blow their own grandfather to help them level up their character in World of Warcraft. While crack is nice and all, I haven't completely shied away from the world of MMOs. I have just been waiting for that one awesome game to come along that will make me put down my bong, drop my boner, and plant my ass in front of my computer to the point where moss starts forming in my ass crack. And with the recent release of Marvel Heroes, I think I've found that game.

For years now, Marvel has been developing an MMO with Gazillion Entertainment. They already got the ball rolling with the Super Hero Squad MMO, a game that is mostly for kids and won't excite Marvel fans that aren't still wearing diapers. Marvel Heroes promised to create a massive Marvel universe where fans could actually play as their favorite characters, explore a wide range of worlds, and generally become one with their own Marvel universe. It's as close as any fans will come to actually having sex with Stan Lee's genius and without spoiling too much, this game fucking delivers and here's why.

Gameplay

First and foremost, the setup is pretty simple. You don't get to customize your characters like World of Warcraft. You just get to select from one of 22 major Marvel characters. But you only start out with 5. You can unlock others as you play through the game or you can just bite the bullet and buy them, which is brilliant on the part of Marvel's part while frustrating on the part of the player. But whatever character you choose, the gameplay is fairly similar.

Like most MMOs, you start out with a few basic abilities and a simple power. From there, you beat the shit out of waves of enemies that include AIM agents, Hydra agents, Kingpin thugs, ninjas, and killer robots to help you level up. The skill system isn't as complex as a Final Fantasy game, but it does allow players to customize their character to a unique style. You can be the Baltimore Ravens and have a defensive character or be the New England Patriots and play offense. The game works so that both methods will help you win a Superbowl and every character has their own way of contributing. There are certain limits to leveling up at the moment, but I'm sure Marvel knows that once fans treat their characters like extra limbs they'll be able to shell out more cash for expansion packs.

If you can click a mouse, you can use your character's power. Right click does one move. Left click does another. And as you gain more moves, you can add them to your keyboard to mix things up. There's no complex motions or button combinations. This isn't Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. If you can push buttons, you can play this game. It may be overly general for some, but the strategy and the diversity of moves allow players to use as much or as little brainpower as necessary.

Mastering Storms's power with a mouse is even better than you think it is.

And once you get this basic system down, you're off and running through a wide array of environments. Want to visit the Rock? Or the Avengers Tower? Or the Savage Land? Dr. Doom's backyard? Or even the Jersey docks? Those are all locales in this game, taken right from the pages of the Marvel universe. These worlds are big and there's a lot of shit in them that blows up. So you can just run around and go nuts or you can actually play through the story. Either way, it has a lot to offer and nobody has an excuse for being underwhelmed.

Story

In terms of story, you're not going to find any high-res cut-scenes like Injustice Gods Among Us or any elaborately rendered teasers like the opening for a World of Warcraft expansion. In fact, the entire story plays out mostly as a motion comic, which is pretty damn cheap on the surface. However, it does still convey a detailed story, which was penned by Brian Michael Bendis, who has a solid reputation of giving Marvel comics fans plenty to jerk off to.

The story itself focuses on Dr. Doom, who is the one that kick started the events that triggered this game. He's got a raging hard-on for the Cosmic Cube, which anyone who saw the Avengers movie (ie everyone) knows can tear the universe several assholes when in the wrong hands. And there are few hands more wrong than Dr. Doom.

Giant Robots. The envy of every tyrant.

Over the course of the story, he interacts with numerous other villains like Hydra, AIM, and the Purifiers. They all get roped into a battle that spans those many Marvel locales I mentioned. So it isn't just a case of Marvel creating these worlds and throwing the characters into it. They actually do factor into the story, albeit on a very basic level. But that basic kind of storytelling is part of what makes the game so accessible. You don't need to be a hardcore Marvel fan to understand it. You just need to know that Dr. Doom is an asshole him having the Cosmic Cube is like North Korea having an unlimited supply of weapons grade plutonium.

But still, some fans may be disappointed by the basic story and its linear nature. This isn't the kind of game where fans can sort of craft their own story like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Dragon Age. There really isn't anything you can do to change how it turns out. That may be disappointing to some, but it still gets the job done in terms of making this feel like a real Marvel universe.

Graphics

And since gamers are like stoners in that they can't get enough pretty pictures, I'll say that the graphics of Marvel Heroes are average to somewhat above average. Make no mistake, this game will not blow anyone away with deep rendered characters where you can count the number of hair follicles on Wolverine's beard or see the split ends of Thor's golden locks. But it will still create visually appealing worlds with plenty of detail. It also helps that you can blow up a lot of the shit in those worlds, as I mentioned earlier.

Also, if you want to play this game, make sure you got a decent graphics card. I had to update the drivers on mine because there were times when animations would get choppy and the sound wouldn't line up with the actions. It was like the lip motions of an old Jackie Chan movie that was badly dubbed in English at times. However, those times were fairly rare. The animations themselves were fluid for the most part. You could also zoom in and see more of the intimate details of the characters, but not to the point where you can look down Black Widow or Miss Marvel's dress I'm afraid.

It's still hot enough for most fans.

Now maybe it's because my computer isn't built as one of these custom gaming computers. I've seen some MMO fans treat their computers the same way NASCAR drivers treat their cars. I don't know why my computer needs a fucking racing stripe or more lights than a Christmas tree, but I don't see how it would help make any of the graphics in Marvel Heroes much better. It's not a game where detailed graphics are the focus. It's a game where you get to play as your favorite character and kick ass with a wide range of powers.

That said, the motion comics that play out the story still come off as a cheap cost-cutting measure that Marvel and Gazillion agreed on. There aren't any cut scenes that are nicely rendered where you can get that extra level of detail that you can't get from the comics. Since there are a number of MMOs that put some serious gold into giving needy gamers something pretty to look at, Marvel Heroes feels like it's behind the curve. But like I said, that doesn't take away from the gameplay or the enjoyment factor.

Overall

Perhaps there's another reason why the gameplay is basic and the graphics are not over-the-top. Marvel Heroes is a free to play MMO. Yes, you heard right. Marvel Heroes is FREE. Somewhere out there Mitt Romeny is shitting himself. For a game that's free to play, you get a ton of shit to enjoy with Marvel Heroes. You don't have to buy the extra costumes or characters. You can, if you're patient, get all this shit by playing through the game. Years of weed has killed my attention span, but that may not be the same for others so they may not give as many fucks about the shortcomings. Like free pizza you find in a dumpster, you get what you pay for.

If you're a Marvel fan of any level, you'll find something to enjoy about this game. Whether you've only seen the movies or have collected every comic and worship Stan Lee as the second coming of Christ, you'll find a lot to enjoy about this game. Even if you generally don't give a shit about computer games, you'll be able to play this one and enjoy it to the point where you'll gladly waste hours of life and productivity in this immerse Marvel universe.

Where else can you play as Squirrel Girl and Not Get Criticized?
Between the gameplay and the story, the overall package of Marvel Heroes is worth its weight in Wakandan vibranianm. It's fun. It's addictive. It's diverse. It's basically everything Republicans tell you is bad for you. That alone should give some people sufficient reason to try this out. I give Marvel Heroes a 4 out of 5. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to leveling up my characters, kicking Dr. Doom's ass, and saving enough gold to buy sexy Jean Grey's Black Queen outfit.. Nuff said!
