Scanned Thoughts: All New X-men #20

Let's not kid ourselves. Teenage hormones scare the shit out of us. Everyone at some point remembers a time when they were at the mercy of hormones and instincts that overwrote every logical portion of the brain. Every repressive culture on the planet tries their hardest to contain teenage passions. That's why they're forcibly locked up in public schools like prisoners and segregated on the grounds that some mystical desert god will torture them mercilessly if they give into these desires. Because the only thing more terrifying to grumpy old fucks than change is the thought of teenagers having sex and enjoying it. The horror. Many teenagers have hooked up over the history of the X-men. Some have led to epic love stories. Some have been so casual they might as well have been ordering a pizza. All New X-men #20 got a lot of people talking, including yours truly, when it revealed O5 Cyclops and X-23 swapping spit on the cover. Well now we finally get to see if that cover was just another bullshit ruse. Given the power of teenage hormones, I'm sure those old fucks I mentioned earlier are absolutely terrified.

As for most regular fucks, they would be more terrified by the notion that they now have a clone of Wolverine in their midst and they took her to a former Weapon X base. That's like taking Jason Voorhees to a camp counselor convention. No good can possibly come of it. Kitty Pryde and the rest of the O5 X-men don't seem to realize that until after she wakes up and looks at them the same way I look at a plate of freshly cooked bacon. They try to talk to her in a calm, caring manner. They also don't seem to realize that she's a fucking teenage girl who happens to be related to Wolverine. She might as well be Charlie Sheen in a Tijuana whore house. There's no calming her down. At the very least, she healed from that horrible Sinead O'Conner look in the previous issue. She also says outright that she knows who she is so we don't have to deal with any of that amnesia shit. Lord knows Wolverine already milked that cow to death and wiped his ass with the udders.

It's only at this point that Kitty and the O5 X-men figure out that bringing X-23 to a former Weapon X facility was a shittier idea than mixing laxatives with sleeping pills. She storms out, wearing only a pair of shorts and a tank top. But it's too late for them to apologize for being more short-sighted than George W. Bush on a relapse. And to X-23's credit, she doesn't make them feel any dumber by trying to carve their lungs out and shove them up their asses. She just bolts, not even taking the time to change into something more appropriate than a pair of shorts and a tank top. By Miley Cyrus standards, she's still overdressed.

But Kitty Pryde and O5 X-men aren't about to let their short-sighted stupidity piss off another temperamental mutant with adamantium claws. O5 Jean reveals that she picked up on a few thoughts that showed X-23 picking up pretty quickly that she was in a Weapon X facility, as if her threatening them and running off wasn't a clear enough sign. The reaction of the rest of the O5 is actually pretty funny. They can't imagine why the fuck anyone would want to clone Wolverines. Obviously, they don't work for Marvel's marketing department or Fox because clone Wolverines to them is basically like having their own printing press for money. But regardless of why anyone would want more Wolverines running around in the Marvel universe, O5 Cyclops takes it upon himself to go talk to her. If anyone is going to get through to X-23, it might as well be the guy whose penis one day satisfies Jean Grey and Emma Frost.

But even before he reaches her, O5 Jean picks up that he "fancies" X-23. I'm not sure if that means he just likes how her tits look or if he wants to be her personal gigolo. But she doesn't seem overly upset about it, which is somewhat strange considering she freaked the fuck out when she sensed O5 Cyclops and O5 Beast entertaining thoughts of hooking up with other women. It doesn't seem to fit the ongoing narrative of O5 Jean being very sensitive to other women that draw the attention of her other teammates. Did she just suddenly stop giving a shit? When did that happen? It's a strange inconsistency and one I hope doesn't get forgotten along with Wesley Snipe's tax returns.

O5 Cyclops let's his teammates speculate on just what "fancies" might imply and goes after X-23. He catches up with her when she apparently figures out that she's horribly under-dressed for this weather, although she could probably still be a cheerleader for the Green Bay Packers. O5 Cyclops tries to talk to her in a calm, understanding tone again. Naturally, X-23 isn't buying it. She just got done battling Arcade's nightmares in Murderworld. She's not exactly going to trust someone who looks like a teenage version of a guy she didn't really care much for the last time she was with the X-men. But she sniffs him to confirm that this is actually a teenage Cyclops. I also imagine that she's glad it's so cold out because it effectively conceals her panties, which would probably be soaked if they were still in Florida.

X-23 hasn't apparently been keeping up with the X-men's Twitter feed. She doesn't know that the O5 X-men have traveled from the past and are stuck in the present for a while. She's understandably confused, as were so many other fans when it was first announced. I know where she's coming from and she doesn't have the luxury of knowing where to get awesome weed. She also has to contend with the notion of having two Cyclops's to deal with. I imagine that's too much for any girl's panties to contain. But beyond the novelty of dealing with another Cyclops, there's still the issue of what the fuck happened to her in Florida that made her an amnesic Patrick Stewart cos-player.

The conversation that follows is pretty well-done despite having some very disturbing topics. It's still a bit inconsistent though. At one point they're talking about her being chased by religious zealots that gave way too much money to Rick Santorum in the last presidential election and the next X-23 is floored by the notion of being around Jean Grey, who she never got to meet before she joined the X-men. It's like a conversation between a couple of teenagers with ADD and damaged short term memory, but they still manage to stay on track for the most part.

And once again, O5 Jean cheats a little by reading more of X-23's thoughts. She, O5 Beast, and Kitty Pryde happen to be evesdropping, probably because they're curious to see if X-23 is going to jump O5 Cyclops's bone. However, O5 Jean's voyeur fetish is effectively killed when she senses just what happened to X-23 in Florida. But before she can probe deeper, Kitty Pryde scolds her. She still hasn't quite learned why it's not polite to read someone's thoughts without permission. She's proving to be a slower learner than Lindsey Lohan at rehab. But seeing that she's more disturbed by X-23's thoughts than she is at the notion of O5 Cyclops wanting to bone her says a lot.

After the novelty of talking to a time-displaced X-man wears off, X-23 finally starts filling in some blanks. Apparently, she just happened to be visiting Florida at the worst possible time. She was a mutant and the Purifiers were looking for mutants. They found her and tortured her in ways that would probably make the Spanish Inquisition vomit uncontrollably. She was so wounded that it took her a while to heal and her memories didn't exactly heal fast enough. It's as good an explanation as anyone could have hoped for. She was just really fucked up by the Purifiers and like Wolverine after an orgy with an army of Lady Deathstrikes, it took a while for her to recover.

But it doesn't just stop with a concise yet disturbing explanation. Despite them taking her to a fucking Weapon X facility, X-23 shows some gratitude for the O5 coming to her rescue. She and O5 Cyclops even have a nice little moment. However, there's no kissing or copping a feel, despite what the cover shows. The most that happens is that O5 Cyclops tries to hug X-23. It sounds creepy, but honestly, who doesn't needs a hug more than X-23 at this point? It's a perfectly innocent gesture and I don't usually get to say that about a couple of teenagers. And X-23 finds it a little awkward, but not because she doesn't appreciate it. She points out that Kitty, O5 Beast, and O5 Jean are still watching, which leads me to believe that if they were in private, she might be more receptive to more than just a hug.

That's pretty much as close to sexy cover we're going to get with this issue. I still won't put it on the same levels as the cover for Astonishing X-men #44, but at least a connection has been established between X-23 and O5 Cyclops. And that connection is more important than just whether or not they'll swap spit because now X-23 is inclined to help the O5 hunt down the Purifiers. And that's what the rest of this issue focuses on.

They return to Florida and track down the Purifers to what looks like an old carnival. I'm pretty sure the Joker could sue them if he wanted because it looks like the same exact place where the Killing Joke took place. I think somewhere out there Alan Moore getting more cantankerous than he already is. They track them down just as the son of William Styker is giving one of his Ted Haggard style speeches, condemning mutants and Cyclops's newfound celebrity. He even touches on the presence of the O5 X-men, criticizing them for giving the finger to the laws of nature. It may be the most reasonable criticism ever offered by a religious zealot, but I still have a hard time taking seriously anyone that uses a scientific argument who thinks the Earth is only 6,000 years old and the sound of a condom opening makes Jesus cry.

Kitty Pryde, X-23, and the O5 can't bust up this sermon fast enough. O5 Jean even fucks with it a bit, tweaking the mind of Stryker Jr. to order that his men take their clothes off rather than prepare to fight mutants. I'm sure it gave them the disturbing impression that they had joined the Catholic church by mistake. But before it turns into something that will give the Vatican more migraines, the X-men bust into their church and start kicking their asses. As satisfying as it is to see them beat up religious zealots, I'm somewhat disappointed that they didn't wait a little longer to see if Stryker Jr.'s men would actually get naked and start doing the kind of shit that would make Elton John blush. Then again, maybe they didn't feel comfortable fighting a bunch of naked religious men. I'm sure plenty of ex-Catholics would feel the same way.

The battle that follows is pretty standard, yet still nicely detailed. It's very similar to the action we saw in the previous issue. The O5 show that they're not just time displaced X-men who still haven't figured out how to destroy an army of Sentinels with one hand tied behind their back. Plus, they now have X-23 on their side. That's like bringing an army of pitbulls to a fight against a pack of hungry squirrels. It seems to be going so well. They're beating up a bunch of religious zealots, they're helping X-23 get a little sweet vengeance on the people that fucked her up, and they get to go to a carnival. That's like the perfect Friday night for Richard Dawkins and Bill Maher.

But of course it can't be that easy. Like debating with creationists, religious zealots always find a way to keep fucking with people. Despite Stryker Jr.'s rant against mutants, he reveals that he has a little mutant mojo of his own. Now it's not clear if this is a mutant power, a product of the recent shit involving the Inhumans, or something he stoke from Tony Stark's dumpster. But he unleashes some big bright light and since LSD is not involved, that's a bad thing because it knocks out almost the entire team. So now it's not just X-23 who is at the mercy of the Purifier's torture. Now it's the whole team. It's like dropping a dozen tied up supermodels into Ted Bundy's basement. It's going to get disturbingly messy.

Well once again, we are the victims of a deceptive cover. If only All New X-men #15 had been so deceptive. My penis was somewhat saddened by how the story played out, but it wasn't discouraged. The main purpose of this issue was to bring X-23 into the mix and it fucking succeeded. And thankfully, there was no amnesia involved and that's a huge relief. Because let's face it, O5 Cyclops hooking up with an amnesiac girl would just be too creepy even for a guy that makes a living pwning Wolverine. And whereas the last issue was just mostly fighting, there was much more talking with this issue. And while X-23 and O5 Cyclops didn't kiss, they did seem to form a connection of sorts. That connection helped fill in some vital blanks and given all the loose ends we had with X-men Battle of the Atom, that's more refreshing than a cold beer at a hot wings eating contest. And all that talking was nicely balanced with some visceral action at the end. Sure, it ended with the whole team getting captured and they're likely to be tortured horribly. But seeing as how the enemies involved are religious zealots that actually take Pat Robertson seriously, is anyone really more disturbed than they would have been after listening to one of Ted Haggard's old sermons? I say thee nay. All New X-men #20 gets an 8 out of 10. It's not epic and it's not going to soak anybody's panties, but it'll encourage everyone to keep a bottle of lube and a box of tissues handy for the next few issues. Nuff said!

All New X-men #20 Lettered Preview - Fancy Revelations

I know I’ve said it on more than one occasion in my drunken reviews and every news story about a high school prank gone horribly wrong keeps proving me right. Teenagers do not make smart decisions. Between overwhelming bodily changes, raging hormones, and raging sex drives there is just too much for the teenage brain to deal with. So how can anyone expect it to be logical? Even if it means fucking up the entire space time continuum, teenagers will find some ways to think with the wrong head.

That’s part of what has generated so much interest surrounding All New X-men #20. It isn’t just the promise of two teenage characters succumbing to their insatiable desires to hook up in ways that would make Bill O’Riley’s head explode. This is a very unique kind of hook-up and in a series that has had psychic affairs and incest, that’s saying something. I’ve already done multiple blog posts on this issue and the unlettered preview that came out a few weeks ago. Now this issue that has brought out a unique kind of bitching and moaning on message boards is only a week away.

And I don’t think anyone should be surprised that Marvel released an advanced preview. This time it’s lettered and that’s a good thing because what is said here answers some of the burning questions from All New X-men #19, which I articulated in my usual drunken manner. But it also raises a few new issues with some new implications. I’ll let Comic Book Resources take it from here since they can do their work sober.

• The fallout of X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM continues!

• X-23 is back and kissing… WHO IS THE MYSTERY MAN??!

Seeing this preview was a relief in same way taking a really good shit after gorging on buffalo wings the previous night is a relief. In All New X-men #19, X-23 apparently took a note from her father’s playbook and lost her damn memory. But it looks like in this issue, she got it back. It’s not clear how, which I pray to Odin isn’t glossed over like so many other details. But it saves this series the trouble of dealing with another amnesia Weapon X plot. That shit has been more done to death than the last three Adam Sandler movies.

But what is more intriguing is how O5 Jean picked up that O5 Cyclops’s already “fancies” X-23 as she calls it. Now it’s worth pointing out that earlier in this series, O5 Cyclops showed he had about as much fondness for Wolverine as his older counterpart. He optic blasted him the first time he gave him a reason to. So why the fuck would he suddenly fancy Wolverine’s clone daughter? There may actually be some twisted hormonal logic to that. He doesn’t like Wolverine. What could be a better way to pwn him even more than hooking up with his daughter? It’s not enough his older self got to bone Jean Grey. Now he’s going after his daughter. Come to think of it, this is probably the most logical thing Cyclops could do from a teenage hormone perspective.

What also is intriguing is how O5 Jean seems to pick up on this. She doesn’t try and stop him or really get upset, which is saying something considering how she pitched a psychic hissy fit when she sensed O5 Cyclops’s attraction to the Stepford Cuckoos. It could just be something she’s holding in. I don’t think she’s stopped caring who O5 Cyclops is involved with because that would be both OOC and further undermine the space time continuum. And that’s not just my own drunken sentiment. That’s what is hinted at in the issue after this one.

The intent is pretty clear here. X-23 is going to cock-block/pussy-block O5 Jean from O5 Cyclops. It seems fair enough given how she pushed O5 Cyclops away and is flirting with every other member of the team except O5 Iceman, although I’m sure that’s on her to-do list. But in the same way a vindictive ex-girlfriend get upset when she sees her ex hooking up with someone else, it’s going to bother her. And at the same time, it’s going to add more tension to the ongoing drama between O5 Cyclops and O5 Jean Grey.

It’s a plot that I hope Bendis is careful with because as I’ve said before, the Cyclops/Jean relationship by far the most important relationship in the history of the X-men. Tearing them apart isn’t the same as having a teenage Peter Parker break up with a teenage Mary Jane in Ultimate Spider-Man. By destroying the Cyclops/Jean relationship, a whole fuckton of damage happens to the space time continuum and in the post Age of Ultron Marvel universe, that shit just isn’t cool anymore.

For this reason, I don’t think that a hookup between X-23 and O5 Cyclops has a lot of long-term potential. And for another reason, it’s a teenage hookup. There’s a reason why teenage hookups become Shakespearean plays or best-selling books about sparkling vampires. They’re really fucking rare. And given the circumstances for both these characters, I don’t think they’ll be going all Twilight on each other. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be awesomely entertaining. Besides, if we didn’t have teenagers to make fools of themselves, the world would be way too fucking boring. Nuff said!

All New X-men #20 Preview - Raging Teenage Hormones

There’s a good reason why adults are wary of allowing teenagers to make competent, rational decisions. In many cases, the concept of a “competent rational decision” for a teenager is no different than the concept of “how can I get away with this shit and not get in trouble?” I say this not to disparage all teenagers. I can only speak from my own experience. When I was 16, I was given the seemingly simple task of planning a friend’s birthday party. Yet for some reason, I thought his parents wouldn’t have any problem with having the party at Hooters. I know it’s perfectly logical to an adult why that’s dumber than mixing laxatives with sleeping pills, but at the time my brain hadn’t developed beyond the point of putting breasts into the context of everything I did.

It’s easy to forget that the X-men were once immature teenagers. Even the younger members of the team conduct themselves with a maturity that would make most parents and high school principals overjoyed. But at some point, they were at the mercy of their hormones and those hormones led them to do some pretty crazy shit. After all, isn’t being a mutant a lot like going through puberty? We go through physical changes that would make caterpillars shit bricks, we start thinking shit that we don’t know can get us arrested in most states, and we react in the most irrational way possible when shit doesn’t go our way. That’s part of why All New X-men has been such a compelling book. It takes some of the most developed characters from the history of X-men and reverts them to their immature teenage selves…except for Iceman since he was always immature.

That immaturity has been the driving force behind so many plots since All New X-men began. And it’s not just the reactions that naturally come with learning that some of them end up dead while others end up killing Charles Xavier. Like a teenage girl whose parents just found birth control pills hidden in their sock drawer, they react to other situations in ways so illogical that Spock would probably shit himself. There really was no logic behind O5 Jean Grey’s decision to push O5 Cyclops away and jump into the arms of the first person who entertained naughty thoughts about her. There’s also no logic behind O5 Angel ditching his team the first chance he gets after he finds out that his older self goes batshit crazy. I imagine that if he found out he got to bang a hot Asian girlfriend, he would probably think it was worth it.

But for O5 Cyclops, he has managed to remain fairly controlled in terms of his emotions. He might as well be to teenage maturity what Peyton Manning is to playing quarterback in the NFL. Everybody hates him for what he becomes, the love of his life pushes him away, and his older self grows up to be the asshole that kills Charles Xavier. Yet he still maintains the boy scout persona that his adult self probably lost in Emma Frost’s vagina. He has tried to make things right. He has been trying to write a tortured love letter to O5 Jean Grey since the beginning of the series. But at some point, even a mature teenager succumbs to the power of hormones.

This process has already begun for O5 Cyclops. In All New X-men #18, he actually started entertaining the idea that he could hook up with a woman who wasn’t Jean Grey or a clone of her. He still left the door open for hooking up with clones of Emma Frost, but I don’t think teenage hormones can ever be blamed for that. And according to the cover of All New X-men #20, he’ll do way more than just entertain the idea. Well today, Marvel released an unlettered preview for All New X-men #20. And while it’s too easy to come to any conclusions from unlettered previews, especially when stoned, it’s pretty much a given that teenage hormones will be a far more daunting threat than the Purifiers.

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at the action-packed All-New X-Men #20, from the blockbuster creative team of Brian Michael Bendis, Brandon Peterson & Mahmud Asrar! There’s a new student at the New Xavier School – and she’s not too happy her new “campus” is housed inside a former Weapon X facility! X-23 wants answers – and she’s not going to ask nicely. But before she gets then, she and the All-New X-Men must face down a heavily armed squad of mutant-hunting Purifiers! And Laura may just find comfort in the arms of one of her new teammates – young Cyclops of the All-New X-Men! It all starts this December in All-New X-Men #20!

So I guess it’s official. X-23 is back in the X-men comics and I just felt some tears of joy on my eyes. That or my ex-girlfriend mixed hot sauce in my whiskey, in which case I’ll be finishing the rest of this blog entry on the toilet. It’s also official that X-23 still hates Weapon X facilities and it may be a shitty idea to bring her to one, even if it has been converted into a school. Her reaction to waking up in such a setting wearing only slightly more than what Miley Cyrus wears in her music videos has to be pretty distressing. But she was a teenage prostitute at some point. I have to believe she has woken up in way shittier situations amidst much more disturbing smells.

While her reaction to the Weapon X facility is expected, her interaction with O5 Cyclops is somewhat less so. She doesn’t exactly look inclined to kiss him and let him cop a feel in the preview. Then again for all we know, O5 Cyclops is asking her if she charged extra for anal. That’s the drawback of these unlettered previews. Drunks like me are left to make way too many crazy assumptions. But at the very least, it seems O5 Cyclops takes it upon himself to reach out to X-23. Considering she’s a hostile teenage girl with anger management issues and the clone/daughter of Wolverine, that alone makes O5 Cyclops the bravest motherfucker in the history of the universe. And perhaps this is what lays the foundation for that kiss, if of course the cover doesn’t turn out to be total bullshit as so many others have.

I'll bet Wolverine is PISSED that this wasn't fake.
If it does happen, I don’t think O5 Cyclops would try to resist. He may still be in love with Jean and he may still be a boy scout, but he’s still a teenage boy and X-23 is an attractive teenage girl. And for whatever reason, a sizable number of teenage boys get a boner around an attractive girl that could kill them in their sleep. Teenage hormones will be the driving force in this story and it will likely add to the ongoing drama between O5 Cyclops and O5 Jean Grey. He already saw her breasts in X-men: Battle of the Atom and she saw him shirtless. That creates a volatile cocktail of teenage hormones that makes TNT look like expired soda.

For all we know, this is like two ex-lovers trying to one-up each other. O5 Jean wants to hook up with O5 Beast or O5 Angel, then that’s fine. O5 Cyclops will respond by swapping spit with X-23. They’re pushing each other away, but they can only push so far. The integrity of the timeline kind of needs them to hook up at some point, barring another deal with Mephisto. And unless Marvel wants to resort to that bullshit again (and they might), they’re going to have to overcome these teenage hormones at some point. It’s just going to be an uphill battle to say the least. Hell, that battle will definitely be more exciting than any battle against the Purifiers. At least they only want to kill mutants. These hormones are going to drag them to the brink of insanity by their genitals. Nuff said!

CBR X-POSITION: The X-Editors Answer One of My Questions

It has been a while since I was sober enough to submit some questions to CBR's weekly X-POSITION column. Don't get me wrong. I've had my share of questions and I read X-POSITION as regularly as I take a shit after eating an extra large spicy burrito from Taco Bell. And even when I submit questions, the decision to have them answered is at the mercy of the fine folks at CBR who are probably responsible enough to do most of their writing sober. But after a long period of time I just can't measure due to blackouts, one of my questions got asked and answered in a column featuring the editors to the X-books. Like seeing a puppy take a shit in the yard of that annoying neighbor who never mows their lawn, it's one of those little pleasures that make life more enjoyable.

MarvelMaster616 has a quick question about the relationship status of the X-Men.
Between what happened with Jean Grey and Beast and what might happen between Cyclops and X-23, what can you say about the future of the Cyclops/Jean relationship? Is Marvel looking to do to them what was also done to the Peter/Mary Jane relationship in Spider-Man?

White: Mary Jane? You mean Peter's former live-in girlfriend who he totally never married?

Lowe: WONH WONH. The only thing Brian [Michael Bendis], Stuart [Immonen] and the rest of the "All-New X-Men" creators are trying to do is tell interesting stories that will take you all by surprise and get you talking and shocked and such.

That's not much of an answer. In fact, it's a dodge that's almost on the same level as Mitt Romney. My concerns are neither eased or worsened. Marvel's recent track record of just surprising and shocking fans is usually just code for pissing fans off. Because for reasons that I still don't understand, pissed off fans still buy these comics. It happened with Superior Spider-Man and I don't doubt it'll happen with the X-men comics. But at some point, pissed off fans have to get too pissed off about being pissed off. At least I hope that's what happens. I'm okay with being shocked and surprised. But if I want to get pissed off, I'll re-watch the Soprano's finale. I don't need to feel that in my comics. So whatever shocking and surprising shit Marvel has in store, I hope they're smart enough to do it for the right reasons in the right way.

This could be so right and so wrong in so many ways.
I know that's wishful thinking, especially for a drunk. I can only take comfort in the knowledge that Marvel never likes to fuck shit up too much before reverting it back to a certain status quo. A quick fix is just a deal with Mephisto away. Nuff said!

All New X-men #20 Cover Revealed - X-23 and O5 Cyclops?!

Lately, covers for upcoming comic books have been pissing me off. Not because they don’t look pretty. Hell, comic book covers are right up there with aluminum foil in terms of awesome shit to look at while stoned. But lately, Marvel has been using covers to agitate fans like itchy power on a tampon. I certainly felt my share of agitation when I saw the cover for All New X-men #15. That or I was just way too sober. That was actually one cover that turned out not to be a fucking ruse unfortunately. Marvel has had a long history of deceptive covers that have agitated fans for the same reason that Hugh Hefner bones a 22-year old supermodel. They just do it because they can. I don’t think I need to remind some readers about this.

Or this:

Or more recently, this:

Spoiler: They hugged it out.
Now with Battle of the Atom nearing its conclusion, Marvel is already starting a fresh round of agitation for the aftermath. Like putting crazy glue on toilet paper, they baited fans with this mysterious cover last month for All New X-men #20.

I actually did an article on this. In it, I speculated that the mysterious man swapping spit with X-23 is O5 Iceman. My main reason was that O5 Iceman hasn’t done jack shit since All New X-men began. He’s due for a major story and I like to think that Marvel tries to be balanced with their classic characters. I also like to think the IRS doesn’t screw me over on my taxes each year, but even I can’t get that stoned. So I guess I shouldn’t have been too shocked when I found out that I’m dead fucking wrong.

Whether by accident or part of the recent round of revelations from the New York Comic Con, the undoctored cover was revealed. It wasn’t Photoshopped either. This shit comes directly from Marvel’s official website. And the identity of the lucky guy kissing Wolverine’s clone/daughter is…well, I’m too sober to tell so I’ll just show.

It’s fucking O5 Cyclops. Apparently, Marvel isn’t done demonstrating the sheer power of Cyclops’s penis. Even as a teenager, it’s so powerful that it soaks the panties of a living weapon who happens to be related to Wolverine. I can already hear the slash fanfiction writers everywhere using this to justify the kinkiest gay smut ever between Wolverine and Cyclops. Considering that Wolverine and Cyclops currently hate each other, this sort of thing represents the ultimate “fuck you” from Cyclops to Wolverine. I guess it’s not enough that he banged Jean Grey and he never could. Now he’s looking to bang his teenage clone/daughter. That may very well be the single greatest act of pwnage in the history of any universe.

As epic a pwnage it is, it also raises some distressing concerns for a sober mind. Ever since Battle of the Atom began, O5 Cyclops has been hung up on Jean. He’s been so hung up on her that he has been willing to follow her and trust her everywhere. While he doesn’t seem to know that she swapped spit with O5 Beast (and neither of them seem to know that he got flirty with a stranger in All New X-men Special #1), his emotions for her have been a driving force since All New X-men began. Yet this seems to imply, assuming the cover isn’t a ruse, that something changes.

This could mean any number of things. It could mean that when Battle of the Atom ends, O5 Jean basically gives a big middle finger to O5 Cyclops, rips up the wedding invitation he gave her, and says she doesn’t ever want to have a future with him. That would be pretty fucking cold, but given how Marvel has treated long-term relationships lately (see Spider-Man and Mary Jane), I think it’s a possibility. I think this would really fuck a lot of things up in addition to taking a bit shit on the most storied romance in the history of X-men. But again, Marvel is not above pulling shit like that.

It could also be something that is a bit less of a dick move on Marvel’s part. Seeing as how the Cyclops/Jean/Wolverine/Emma Frost love fest was so epic in Grant Morrison’s New X-men, maybe Marvel wants to capture that four-way orgy of emotion again. This time with X-23/Cyclops/Jean/Beast. When O5 Cyclops finds out that O5 Jean kissed Beast, who is basically his friend, he might be upset enough to try and push her away. It could just be another emotional wedge, not unlike the many Brian Michael Bendis used with Peter and Mary Jane during his Ultimate Spider-Man run (until he fucking killed Peter). In fact, they broke up twice during his run and Peter dated Gwen for a while so this may just be the same story with different characters. And I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to an approach like that. Bendis has shown that he’s good at making shit like this work and playing up the drama. I would love to see him do for O5 Cyclops and O5 Jean what he did for Ultimate Peter Parker and Mary Jane, minus the part where he fucking killed Peter Parker.

Or perhaps it may be the complete reverse. In Battle of the Atom, O5 Cyclops and O5 Jean come closer and they try to embrace the future rather than avoid it. But they find out that by trying to be together and fix all the things that ended up going wrong in their relationship (and that list is pretty long), they encounter new complications. X-23 might be one of those complications. I think this isn’t likely since Marvel is allergic to any kind of happiness within relationships, even if it is between teenagers. They seem to adopt the DC mentality of, “Fuck long term relationships, present and future. Let’s just have every character stay single.” I believe that relationships like Superman and Wonder Woman have shown that it is possible to tell a decent story that people will enjoy by showing a relationship grow rather than tearing it apart. But maybe that’s just the romantic in me and maybe that’s also because it has been too long since my last trip to Tijuana.

I’m sure if I smoked a bit more weed, I could come up with some other crazier theories. Right now, I’m not sure which is the most likely. I think the odds are I’m wrong on all three because I can’t seem to guess anything right with Marvel lately. And maybe that’s the point. Marvel doesn’t like being predicable. They love having as many WTF moments as possible and this definitely qualifies. As for what comes of it, that’s not clear. The end of Battle of the Atom in a few weeks may offer insight, but for now I’m just going to get stoned and try to come up with as many theories as I can. Nuff said!

All New X-men #20 Cover - Who The Fuck Is X-23 Kissing?!

Nothing gets comic book fans more riled up than seeing seeing their favorite heroes swap spit with someone unexpected. It's like giving a meth addict a case of Red Bull. It'll create the kind of shit storm that will have fans either dreading how this will ruin their favorite characters or contemplating how they'll use this to create smut fanfiction. Now I admit I've been fairly guilty of participating in this shit storm before. I also admit I tend to react strongly to kisses that I deem too fucked up to take place outside Bangkok whore house. But at least I'm honest about it.

Honesty still makes me sick to my stomach.
But not every superhero kiss triggers the kind of reaction that I usually reserve for bar fights after football games. Sometimes they trigger genuine intrigue that makes me contemplate things that I don't usually contemplate without a kickass strain of weed. Earlier today, Marvel released their solicitations for December 2013. Usually at this time of year, I'm focused on getting drunk on eggnog. But a future issue of All New X-men #20 has me thinking I might add a little extra bourbon this year.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #20
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • BRANDON PETERSON (A/C)
X-MEN 50th ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by TBD
• The fallout of X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM continues!
• X-23 is back and kissing… WHO IS THE MYSTERY MAN??!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Well this confirms one of two things. First and foremost, it confirms what was already hinted at earlier this year at San Diego Comic Con. At the X-men Panel, it was announced that X-23 would be rejoining the X-books after her extended stint in Avengers Arena. And not able to contain his excitement, Brian Michael Bendis hinted that she would be joining one of his books. Well we now know that he wasn't just drinking too much Red Bull. X-23 is officially coming to All New X-men. And she won't waste time getting friendly with her new team. Like Wolverine, she just has to get emotionally entangled with someone or fuck them, whichever comes first.

But who could it be? Who would be in a position to soak X-23's panties? She hasn't had much of a love life since Hellion turned out to be a total prick. She didn't get a lot of action in Avengers Arena so who catches her fancy in All New X-men? I posed this question on the CBR Message Board, but that was like asking retarded dog for help on my Calculus homework. Everyone seems to be making some pretty major assumptions, namely that X-23 is going to hook up with O5 Cyclops. Their primary reason...it would make Wolverine shit out his spine. Now I don't deny that Wolverine would probably react more violently than Charlie Sheen when he's out of blow at the knowledge of his clone daughter hooking up with Cyclops, but beyond that what the fuck would it do? I'm not saying it isn't possible. Bendis has already shown that he's willing to entertain fucked up pairings in All New X-men. But this shit would make even less sense than Jean and Beast.

I usually try not to make predictions because I rarely make good ones when it comes to comics. But I suspect this could be either O5 Iceman or O5 Angel. First of all, the guy in the cover doesn't have Cyclops's hair style or any hint of a visor. Iceman tends to have shorter hair more akin to Brad Pitt whereas Cyclops's hair is more akin to George Clooney. O5 Angel also has a similar hairstyle and given the shakeups in Battle of the Atom, he might end up rejoining the team. His wings might not be visible, but that doesn't mean they're not there. But at this point, I hope it's O5 Iceman and here's why.

To date, every character in the O5 has had a major story about them. O5 Cyclops and Jean Grey have been at the center of damn near every arc to date. O5 Beast shined early on when he helped heal his older self. O5 Angel got some face time when he met his older self and defected to Cyclops's revolutionary team. But O5 Iceman hasn't done jack shit. He hasn't been a major player in any of the arcs. He hasn't even been given a love interest. His willingness to flirt with a dangerous mutant girl in X-men Battle of the Atom #1 shows that he still has a functioning penis. He also showed that his penis responds favorably to dangerous girls and X-23 is dangerous on a level that even my ex-girlfriends can't match. And since everyone else seems to be getting their dicks wet in All New X-men, why not Iceman?

Then again, Bendis has been known to give the finger to expectations in the past. It really does depend on how Battle of the Atom ends. If the story ends with Cyclops and Jean becoming more distant, then I think X-23 will act as a rebound girl for O5 Cyclops. But if that story ends with them becoming closer and the Hank issue falling to the wayside, then I think O5 Iceman or O5 Angel are more likely. So far in Battle of the Atom, Jean and Scott have had their share of moments. But Marvel has shown time and again that they're willing to totally fuck up relationships, even long-established and cherished relationships. For that reason, I'm keeping my rubber boots handy because I'm certain that when the identity of the mystery man is revealed, a river of bullshit will follow. Nuff said!
