Wolverine and the X-men #21 - Circus of Insanity/Awesome

An issue of Wolverine and the X-men is like masturbation. Even when it's not that good, it's still pretty damn awesome and nowhere near as messy...for the most part. Ever since it began under Jason Aaron, Wolverine and the X-men has set itself apart by being somewhat less serious and more fun. Because in this day and age where people still take Glenn Beck seriously, we need to lighten up. For so long the X-men have basically been like the men at the Alamo, holding up on Utopia and doing their best to not be wiped out. Wolverine, having had enough last stands and brutal violence for ten lifetimes and/or three Expendables movies, decided to ditch that shit and found the Jean Grey Institute. Rather than being fucked up by violence, he founds a school and names it after the woman he desperately tried to fuck. Makes perfect sense.

The first few arcs of Wolverine and the X-men were fun in that Jason Aaron explored all the insane logistics of just putting this school together and keeping it from blowing the fuck up, which in some stories was a real possibility. But now the school is established. The X-men have managed to bribe enough officials and blow enough politicians to become a legitimate facility for aspiring mutants. And after the events of Avengers vs. X-men (where the school almost got blown up mind you), a whole new population of mutants has emerged after the Phoenix unfucked the universe from the Scarlet Witch. That means there are plenty of prospective students that are in need of the quality education that a hard-drinking, ill-tempered brute that likes to chase after married women can offer. I imagine it's what being home schooled by my Uncle Metalballs would be like.

Wolverine and the X-men #20 did a nice job of establishing the kind of world that the Jean Grey Institute now must function. It had Angel, who is still dealing with having his mind thrown into a blender after the Dark Angel Saga, go on a little recruiting run. He managed to convince a scared yet incredibly bonable Brazilian woman that turns into a half-shark creature to join the Jean Grey Institute, but it wasn't as easy as simply offering free tickets to Carnival and a lifetime supply of thongs. Mystique and a new collection of mutants who seek to do to young mutants what Fox News does to America tried to beat him to it. Angel managed to succeed, but like the evil that runs Fox News seriously there are plenty of vulnerable minds in this new mutant-rich world for them to fuck with.

Wolverine and the X-men #21follows up this triumph with a gentle reminder that most of these mutants are still teenagers. And if you put a bunch of teenagers under one roof and take away all the authority figures, then you're bound to end up with nothing but destruction, chaos, and maybe a few orgies. When the issue begins with Kid Omega realizing that all the adults at the Jean Grey Institute have disappeared, we don't see any orgies. We're just left to assume they're going on somewhere. But while some of the students use this as an opportunity to live out all the sadistic fantasies that all non-superpowered teenagers have, Kid Omega decides to investigate. Because unlike everyone else, he doesn't need authority figures to be absent to be a raging douche-bag.

Whereas most of the students are using the absence of the Jean Grey Institute staff to reenact their version of the ending to Mad Max, some are a bit more responsible and try to offer at least some hope for the human race. Idie, the sweet yet overly religious young girl, decided to skip the opportunity to run naked through the halls and take a shit on Wolverine's desk to meet with a priest. He basically told her that the Jean Grey Institute was not a healthy influence on her and she might as well be hanging out in Satan's basement and watching her classmates blow demons for shits and giggles. That would be distressing enough, but it turns out this priest that is trying to corrupt Idie in a way Pat Roberson only jerks off to isn't really a priest. He's a robot, courtesy of one of the Hellfire Club brats.

Now I'm usually inclined to go on another rant about how having the Hellfire Club being run by a bunch of sociopath brats is more fucked up than a karaoke party at Simon Cowell's house. It's not like Jason Aaron has done anything to make the premise of the Hellfire Brats more believable, but in this instance he does try to explore them a bit more like he did with Kade Kildare a few issues ago. This time he focuses on Maximilian, the Hellfire Brat who happened to become an expert at building robot priests at the same age when most kids his age are just becoming an expert on microwaving hot pockets. He's apparently got a nasty family history that Kade pulled him away from and he's not too happy when Kade brings it up. His task is to corrupt Idie in a way that will lead her to joining the Hellfire Brats. And what better way than religion? Fuck, it worked for the Taliban. Why not the Hellfire Club?

We then go from organized religion to something that's only slightly less fucked up. While Maximilian is fuming, he gets lured into a circus that has suddenly sprung up by a very creepy clown that could only be less creepy if he was in a Stephen King book. It sounds fucked up, but it actually is a solid transition because we finally catch up with the missing X-men from the Jean Grey Institute. For reasons not explained yet probably involve a fuckton of booze and unmarked purple pills, the Jean Grey Institute staff wakes up in the middle of a fucking circus. Storm is locked in a Houdini style lock box at first and when she breaks out, she finds out that she's in the middle of a show. Rather than try to wake herself up with a self-imposed punch to the gut, she just takes a bow and goes with it. Because isn't it everyone's dream to be a circus act at some point?

We quickly find out she's in good company too. Nearly the entire Jean Grey Institute staff has found their own little circus act. Rachel is a fortune teller, but one that isn't a fraud for once. Warbird is a knife-thrower and Shadowcat is a target. Beast is a beast tamer if you can believe that, which is actually an upgrade considering what a raging douche he's been in his other jobs. And Wolverine is the drunken, oafish clown that you love to point at and laugh and never want to leave your children with in a windowless room. What's makes this predicament all the more fucked up is just how believable Jason Aaron makes it sounds. Because let's face it, if mutants were real one of their first inclinations would be to join the circus and make a fuckton of money. Or maybe that's just me.

When Kid Omega and the rest of the Jean Grey Institute students find out about this, some are disturbed while others are elated. Kid Omega calls it the greatest fucking thing he's ever seen. And you know what? I agree with him, as much as that makes me sick to my stomach. If I found out that all my teachers from high school had somehow been brainwashed into joining a circus, I would shit my pants, ejaculate, and laugh for three days straight. I don't consider myself as sadistic as Kid Omega, but as someone who has a healthy disdain for his teachers from high school I can appreciate where he's coming from. However, the rest of the students have to be assholes and try to rescue them from whatever brainwashing that's been going on. Fucking killjoys.

While the Jean Grey Institute students are taking on their teachers with Kid Omega trying desperately not to die of laughter, we learn a little more about who is behind this fucked up concept of a circus. We follow a little girl and her parents on a hellish boat ride that's only slightly more disturbing than that scene from the non-Johnny Depp Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. The girl's parents get their souls sucked out and the little girl somehow escapes to find Frankenstein as being the one behind the madness.

Now on paper, this sounds like a perfect opportunity to slam back some Jack Daniels and go on a drunken rant at how fucked up and random this is. But if instead you take a bong hit from some marginally good weed, you realize it's not too crazy. For one, the Hellfire Brats already unleashed Frankenstein like monsters earlier in another Wolverine and the X-men arc. Plus, Dracula not only exists in the Marvel universe, but he tried to fuck Storm. So is it really too outrageous that he exists in the Marvel universe as well? I'll only say it's outrageous he's running a fucking circus, but there's a reason for that. He claims that he's an abomination and wants revenge on the asshole that gave him this crazy shit called life. It's pretty typical, wanting revenge. But revenge for being fucking alive? Only in a Jason Aaron book could that ever be viable.

Back with the Jean Grey Institute students, they try to confront their teachers and convince them that they're either under mind control or they drank some amazingly potent booze. It's a pretty hard sell. Anybody who has ever tried to convince someone in an altered state of mind of reality will know this all too well. And those same crazies in robes that stole the souls of that little girl's parents earlier shows that she also has a hold on the X-men now. So her first inclination is to force them to attack the children. She could have just as easily had them make a porno and teach the kids to sniff paint fumes, but that's just too devious for someone that steals souls I guess. That or they're not aware of the growing trends in superhero porn.

As the X-men are attacking their students, Frankenstein catches up with Maximilian. It's here where we learn that this particular Hellfire Brat is actually related to Frankenstein, which I guess helps explain his sociopath nature. When you come from a family known for taking dead body parts and using them to create a walking corpse, I guess making evil robots is a pretty tame hobby. But old Frank isn't looking to have a warm family reunion. He's looking to torment this kid in ways that could only be matched by being locked in a windowless room with Michael Jackson's ghost. So while this issue may rank about a 9.4 on the fuck-up-o-meter, it does utilize a few important connections about one of the Hellfire Brats. It still doesn't explain why the X-men were turned into circus acts, but I understand there's only so much sense a Jason Aaron X-book can make.

On paper, this comic sounds like something a writer would only come up with after having their brain soaked in LSD while several hobos peed on him. The X-men being turned into a circus while a kid descended from Frankenstein deals with some daddy issues that would make Dr. Phil's head explode? There's just no way that shit could work without channeling the genius of Alan Moore and the appeal of Pamela Anderson's breasts. I don't know just what Jason Aaron channeled when he came up with this idea, but fuck he found a way to make it work.

Now I've been pretty harsh on the whole Hellfire Brats plot. I love what Jason Aaron has done with Wolverine and the X-men, but the Hellfire Brats are like that floating turd in the punch bowl that you just shrug your shoulders and ignore because the punch tastes that good. Aaron has at least attempted to make the Hellfire Brats viable, but other than giving them an upbringing akin to Ted Bundy and Pol Pot he really hasn't made the notion of a bunch of per-pubescent kids running the Hellfire Club any less ridiculous. Hell, it would be more palatable if explained that their evil stemmed from their inability to get Justin Bieber tickets. But with this, he did at least try to dig a little deeper into the history of one of the Hellfire Brats. It may not have made him less ridiculous, but it provided some nice connections to an otherwise fucked up premise.

This is where Wolverine and the X-men #21 succeeds in ways the previous issue didn't. The previous issue was awesome, but didn't really flow well with the plot of the previous issues. It might as well have been called Wolverine and the X-men: The Shit That Happens When We're Running Low On Filler Material. But this issue actually did forge a few connections, referencing how the Hellfire Brats are going on a recruitment run with new mutants and tying into the plot with the Hellfire Brats that has been unfolding since Avengers vs. X-men. This issue has more flow to it even if it's random as fuck.

And it's this random-as-fuck nature that makes Wolverine and the X-men #21 pretty twisted, even by Jason Aaron's lofty standards. I get that there's probably an equally fucked up explanation as to why the whole staff of the Jean Grey Institute was recruited into a twisted circus while the students were left to reenact Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But given the premise, that explanation is only going to reinforce the twisted nature. It's like waking up naked in a strange bed with a hooker on one side and a baby zebra you stole from the zoo on the other and thinking, "Fuck! I must have gotten wasted last night! I better go get drunk again to fix this!" But for sheer entertainment value and the connections that the previous issue lacked, I give Wolverine and the X-men #21 a 3.5 out of 5. Now unless you insist on your comics being overly serious or were traumatized by a clown as a child, you should find plenty of entertainment value of this issue. If nothing else, it'll only give you a new appreciation to whatever drugs Joe Quesada is giving his fellow writers at Marvel. Nuff said!

X-men Supreme Update - New Commission and Pics Update

I've already started the next and final issue of the Sinister Intent arc for the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. I promise to all you hardcore X-men fans out there that it'll be an ending to remember! In the meantime, I'm overdue for an update to the pics section. I waited until today because once again, the ever talented Brian Brinlee has contributed a new piece to X-men Supreme. His work has been a marvel for this fanfiction series. I can't thank him enough for donating his time and talent to this website. This time, he's done a masterful image for Issue 15: Underworld Part 2. It covers a big moment between Cyclops and the Morlocks. Once again, I thank him for his contributions to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series.

X-men Supreme Official Panels

So long as Brian Brinlee is hard at work, I also made sure the pics section is updated. Namely, the ever popular X-ladies section has gotten a fresh batch of work! I'm always on the look-out for new images to grace the X-men Supreme website. I was able to add some new work to Mystique, Storm, Shadowcat, and the Scarlet Witch. I hope to add more X-women into the mix. By the end of Sinister Intent, I'll finally be able to add a certain X-lady that I've been looking forward to add for quite some time. I don't want to spoil it so you'll have to wait until the end of Sinister Intent!

As always, I deeply thank everybody who has given their support to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. Thank you to those anonymous reviewers who have posted comments on recent issues. Please note you don't have to be anonymous. Feel free to make yourself part of the discussion! Also, don't be afraid to contact me if you have any questions or comments. I'm always open to talking X-men or fanfiction. I'm also open to any art submissions for the pics section. Thanks again everybody! Until next time, take care and best wishes.

X-men Supreme Update - Gambit Bio and Pics

The next issue of the X-men Supreme fanfiction series is almost here! However, I haven't forgotten about the other areas of the X-men Supreme website. I know I've been saying I would update the pics and bios section. Well today, that update is here! In the Cajun Chaos arc, I brought Remy Lebeau into the world of X-men Supreme. I managed to include many details of his life within the story. That doesn't always happen because for certain characters, the situation doesn't always arise. Either way, I'm including a bio to help new readers and old readers of the X-men Supreme fanfiction series understand who Gambit is in this world and why he is who he is. Like every character, I tried to give Gambit some solid depth. You can see my full assessment of his role in X-men Supreme in the bios section.

Bios - Gambit

In addition to the bios section, I did a long overdue update of the pics section. X-men Supreme is always looking to add new pics and I made sure I added plenty of images for your viewing pleasure! Most of these images are in the ever popular sexy X-ladies area. The images include glorious depictions of Mystique, Shadowcat, Storm, and the Scarlet Witch. As always I like to remind everybody that X-men Supreme is always willing to accept submissions to the pics section. So if you want your talent to be displayed on this website, please contact me and I'll be happy to discuss it!

I hope to make more updates in the near future to the pics section for X-men Supreme. I understand that Jean Grey and Rogue weren't included. This is because they tend to have a lot of pics and they take a while to upload. But I promise I'll get to them! I'll also be adding more characters to the bios section very soon as new faces are set to join the X-men Supreme fanfiction series! Please stay tuned for more and thank you for your support!

X-men Supreme Update - Fresh Batch of Pics!

Well all you awesome comic fans out there, the next issue of X-men Supreme is well into development! It's on schedule to be released on time despite the shitty weather that seems to be dampening everyone's enthusiasm. Guess Mother Nature is in a foul mood and taking it out on as many people she can. Just like bitter ex-girlfriends! But if the weather has you down, I have something that may help. The preview for X-men Supreme Issue 26: The Ties That Terrorize still isn't ready yet. But I have made an extensive (and overdue) update to the pics section!

X-men Supreme - Pictures

I meant to do this sooner, but work on the series and my reviews has taken up most of my time and in addition to snow Mother Nature insists that the days only be 24 hours. Blame her, not me! I made sure this update is full of hot, beautiful women to help warm the masses. This includes plenty of updates for X-women such as Rogue, Storm, Mystique, Shadowcat, and the Scarlet Witch. For anyone not interested in pics of sexy X-women (I'm guessing that's not many of you) I also updated the Team Pics section. So there's something for everyone! I didn't get a chance to update the section for Jean Grey, but I hope to get to her later next week! So there's still more to come for all you visual types.

I hope this update acts as a bonus to the preview I post tomorrow. The X-men Supreme fanfiction series has some major developments ahead! Some new characters will be showing up. Some new plots will start to unfold. You'll see! As always, I encourage people to contact me if they have any questions or concerns. If you want to talk X-men or are interested in adding your artwork to my growing collection, feel free to get in touch with me at any time! Until next time, take care and best wishes. Excelsior!

X-men Supreme Update - Supreme Reflections: Kitty Pryde

Well I've done it! I managed to update within a week this time. It wasn't easy, but the X-men Supreme fanfiction series is worth it to me. I hope it's worth it to all those who enjoy reading it. The lucky X-man to get the spotlight this time is another X-woman, Kitty Pryde. She hasn't been around the X-men for very long in the context of X-men Supreme, but she's already proven herself in many ways. This latest entry into Supreme Reflections should offer more insight into who Kitty Pryde is and what makes her tick.

Supreme Reflections - Kitty Pryde

Supreme Reflections has been a great insight into some of the characters I introduced in Volume 1: Mutant Revolution. This fanfiction series has allowed me to explore these characters in many ways. I would like to explore more, but I want to get to Volume 2 soon. For that reason, there will only be one more entry into Supreme Reflections. This one will be for Magneto. Now I wish I could do a weekly update for him, but because of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday that won't be possible. The wait will have to be two weeks again. For this, I am sorry. If you have any questions or concerns on this or other issues related to X-men Supreme, please feel free to contact me. I plan on having a preview ready by next week. So stay tuned! The X-men Supreme fanfiction series has plenty to offer. Excelsior!

X-men Supreme: Issue 18 - Uprising Part 2 is LIVE!

It's time for another update, but on this very special day I've done more than just update the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. Yes, I've taken another step towards the end of Volume 1: Mutant Revolution. The Uprising arc promises to be the most explosive story in this series to date. It's not only going to bring X-men Supreme Volume 1 to it's stunning conclusion, it's going to set the stage for an even bigger Volume 2. Now is a great time to jump into this series because it's only going to get better as the X-men Supreme saga unfolds!

X-men Supreme: Issue 18 - Uprising Part 2

But today isn't just about updating the series. I've spent some extra time doing some more extensive updates the the X-men Supreme website. For too long I've negated the pics section. Well not anymore! I've made a long overdue update to the sexy ladies area, adding pics for Rogue, Mystique, Storm, Jean Grey, and the Scarlet Witch. Not only that, I've added a new X-lady to the mix. Now Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowcat, has her own section as well! I meant to add these in a lot sooner, but better late than never I guess. I definitely plan on adding more and I'm still open to fanart if some want to submit it.

But that still isn't the only addition to this update! I've added a new social networking function to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. Now at the end of every chapter and on the front page of this site, there will be links to add sections of this website to Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and every other social media outlet. I've even started a Facebook page exclusively for this series! So if you have a Facebook page, look up X-men Supreme! It's an open medium for the awesome of X-men Supreme to be shared. There's so much more I want to do with this fanfiction series and I'll do whatever it takes to share it with the world. If you have any suggestions that you feel may help please share them with me! Otherwise, enjoy the new pics and enjoy the new issue. Thanks again to everybody who has supported this series and this blog. You guys are awesome! Excelsior!

X-men Supreme Bios Update and X-men First Class Movie News

It's been a while since I updated the bios section of my website. It's not may fault either. These new characters take time to introduce in a series and X-men Supreme is no exception. For those of you who missed the last issue titled Pryde and Prejudice, I finally got around to bringing Kitty Pryde into the mix. She's a longtime favorite of mine and she looks to bring her own unique edge to the X-men Supreme fanfiction series. Now as I've done with every character I've introduced thus far, I've put a unique twist on Kitty's background. She doesn't have the same history or tendencies in X-men Supreme that she does in the comics or cartoons. Those who were awesome enough to read the issue understand this, but if you would rather have the cliff notes version I've prepared a bio for her explaining who she is and how she got to the point she's at now within X-men Supreme.

Kitty "Shadowcat" Pryde Bio

You'll definitely want to keep up because Kitty will be playing a big role in the final arc that is set to begin with the next issue! The first volume of X-men Supreme has been building towards a big event soon and it's all coming together. The end of Volume 1: Mutant Revolution will bring a major change to the world of X-men Supreme and set the stage for the next volume. You won't want to miss it so if you're looking for a time to jump into the action, there's no time like the present!

As much as I would like to end this post on that note, there's one more tidbit that needs to be brought up. I haven't really posted a lot of news on the upcoming X-men First Class movie lately and for good reason. I've yet to regain any confidence whatsoever in Fox's X-men movies since the travesty that was Brett Ratner's X3. Yet so far Fox and director Matthew Vaughn have put together a sizable cast. This cast includes the following lineup thus far according to IMDB:

Alice Eve - Emma Frost

James McAvoy - Professor Xavier

Michael Fassbender - Magneto

Nicholas Hoult - Beast

Rosamund Pike - Moria MacTaggart (not confirmed officially)

Jennifer Lawrence - Mystique

Kevin Bacon - Sebastian Shaw (not confirmed officially)

Edi Gathegi - Darwin

Lucas Till - Havok

Caleb Jones - Banshee

There is still no word on who is playing Cyclops, Jean Grey, or Storm. If this movie is called First Class it damn well better have...you know, the first class of X-men. However, the biggest question has been whether or not this movie is a prequel or a reboot. If it's a reboot, that's great. A fresh start and a clean slate is just what the movie X-men need. But if it's a prequel, it's a complete waste of film because it doesn't matter what happens in it. Everything is going to get fucked up in X3. That's like trying to make shit that doesn't stink from the same materials. Nobody has been able to clear up just what the hell this movie is.

Well a recent interview from MTV news seems to offer some confirmation and it isn't all that great. Director Matthew Vaughn when asked if First Class will fit into the continuity of the previous X-films, his answer was clear:

"Yeah, I would say absolutely so," Vaughn responded when asked if "First Class" would be an official, in-continuity prequel to the "X-Men" movies that came before it.

So there you have it. This movie just lost all hope of expunging the piss poor shit stain that is X3. He tries to make it out as some compelling tale that tells the audience where these characters came from. Well I say to that who gives a fuck if they're all going to be screwed over in X3!  It doesn't matter how fun or engaging the history of Charles Xavier is in the past, he's going to get screwed over in X3 and so is Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, and Mystique! It's not like the Star Wars prequels in the sense that we know the ending is good and everything does work out in the end. We know how this piece of shit story turns out and anything that leads up to it might as well be toilet paper. It doesn't mean shit!

There may still be some faint sliver of hope. In another story done by Screenrant, the X-men First Class movie was stated to be in continuity the same way the J. J. Abrams Star Trek movie was in continuity.

ScreenRant: X-men First Class is But Isn't a Reboot

Now that's an important distinction because while Star Trek wasn't a reboot, it did completely change the Star Trek continuity as it stood because the movie ventured into the past and redid the time line. If X-men First Class does something similar, then perhaps X3 can be overwritten. It would be a hell of a stretch, but many fans who still have Brett Ratner on their shit list would be very happy. Then again, that's assuming the powers that be are smarter than they've proven themselves over the past few years.

Time will tell, but if nothing is done to address the bullshit ending that X3 did to the series then Vaughn and Fox might as well be pissing into the oncoming wind of a hurricane. Unless they're okay with that, there's no hope for the X-men movie franchise. The sooner it gets rebooted the better. Nuff said.

X-men Supreme Issue 16: Pryde and Prejudice is LIVE!

I know plenty of you are still clamoring for comic reviews. Rest assured, I'll get to them. But first and foremost, I must tend to X-men Supreme. I had to work extra hard to get this update out on time. If I really was working for Marvel they would have been breathing down my neck for the the past two weeks, telling me that delays were not acceptable. I agree. I have no excuses. The X-men Supreme fanfiction series must continue and after some hiccups along the way, the new issue "Pryde and Prejudice" is ready.

X-men Supreme Issue 16: Pryde and Prejudice

This issue is just a one-shot, but it's a hell of a one-shot because it introduces a fan-favorite X-men character. I won't say who it is because the title alone should give it away. This issue also marks the beginning of the end for the first volume of X-men Supreme. So far a lot has happened and it is all for a purpose. The volume has been building towards a big event that will bring together the events of the entire series thus far in a big way. You'll see! Thanks again to all those who have been supporting this blog and this series. None of this would be possible without you. Until next time, take care and don't forget to review the new issue!

X-men Forever Volume 2 Issue 1 - Mixed Awesome

Over the past year I've been pretty harsh on Chris Claremont and X-men Forever. I've had a long list of grievances and an even longer list of pain pills to help me deal with the frustration this series has caused me. Chris Claremont is a comic book legend and his worth is undeniable, but some of the things he's done in X-men Forever has done the equivalent of having three elephants shit diarrhea on his legacy. Between killing Logan, making Jean such a skank, making Cyclops so dismissive, turning Kitty into a new X-23, and twisting Storm beyond recognition it's been one heart-wrenching disappointment after the other. Yet Claremont still finds some room for genuine awesome. The last issue of Giant Size wasn't terrible, but it succeeded mostly by not making worse the transgressions of the previous 24 issues. Now the book is moving forward with a relaunch of what Claremont calls Season 2 and the first issue definitely warrants some interest.

This issue picks up right where Giant Sized left off. Professor Xavier has been taken away by the Shi'ar and the team is struggling to adjust. Cyclops is in charge now and Nick Fury is still lending his hand around the mansion. Everybody seems to have their own share of problems. In classic Claremont (and 80s style for that matter) Kitty is narrating the scene. She's gone through a bit of a transformation and now she looks nothing like her earlier incarnation. She looks like a cross between Angelina Jolie and Courtney Love. It's not very flattering, but the theme seems to be that she's taking on Wolverine's persona with the claw she now has. It makes about as much sense as Quantum Mechanics, but it still works. Other problems are more mundane like Rogue adjusting to having a tail.

These little problems quickly take a back seat when the Avengers (the early 90s version anyways) shows up looking more pissed than grizzly that just watched her cubs get decapitated. Some of the members won't look very familiar because they haven't shown up in the comics in quite a while. Seriously, who remembers Spider-Woman and the silvery version of Vision? It may be a bit of stretch in terms of nostalgia, but at least Claremont is trying to respect the time period where this story stems from. It just feels like twenty six issues too late.

There's no calm sit-down or casual chit chat. The Avengers still haven't gotten over the X-men's role in Tony Stark's death. Apparently, they don't care to ask questions about how he was involved with a murdering nut job like Bolivar Trask or how he was caught up in a plot to wipe out all mutants. They just want to kick the ass of whoever killed him that hasn't already been killed. It's not very heroic, but if a reader read the final part of Giant Sized that set this fight up it makes sense. Anybody who is just jumping on is going to be a bit confused and will see the Avengers as being a bunch of douche bags.

Cap goes through the standard arrest protocols which leads to him hitting Cyclops with his shield. This would be very sweet for those who don't like the direction Cyclops has taken in the books recently, but this isn't the same guy. This is the guy whose watched the love of his life cheat on him and lie to him twice with two of his friends while he's off trying to take care of his son. Really, he doesn't deserve this and if anyone should take a shield to the head it's Jean Grey. Her Forever version deserves to be beat, strangled, and disemboweled more than any other character in this series and she's getting a free pass for the most part. Anybody who is a Jean Grey fan or a fan of Cyclops for that matter is going to feel the veins in their head and neck throb. Anyone who just wants to see a kick-ass Avengers vs. X-men fight will have plenty of reason to smile.

This is where the strength of the issue unfolds. The fight between the X-men and the Avengers here is pretty freakin' epic and undeniable awesome. Claremont may have fucked up the characterizations for a lot of his classics, but he certainly hasn't lost it when it comes to crafting some decent action scenes. This fight encompasses much of the issue and that's a good thing because it's a hell of a spectacle. It shows some fun scenes with the X-men utilizing their strengths as fighters and as a team. Kitty behaves more like Kitty and not some perverse X-23 ripoff when she phases through her enemies rather than tires to slash them Wolvie berserk style. It's a nice change up because she's taken way too many twists lately and not for the better. Some changes are more welcome. Rogue gets to show off her new power when she fights Quicksilver and Kurt (no new codename has been given yet) gets to show of his power when he fights the Scarlet Witch. They're both understandably confused, but in a way that's awesome and hilarious. For someone as powerful as Wanda Maximoff, it's the perfect way to take her out of the equation.

As fun as this fight is, it does unfortunately cut away a few times. There are some unfolding plots involving Sabretooth and Moria, but that's actually done well because it leads Sabretooth to joining the fight. Other scenes are a bit more a of a head-scratcher. Claremont is usually so good at providing hints about other plotlines, but there are times he's a few steps ahead of the readers. At one point he cuts away to some woman in a coma that's resting in a SHIELD headquarters. There aren't too many clues as to who the woman is or how the hell she fits into all this and there's no text to really offer any real substance. It's basically thrown in there and it wastes precious panels that could be used to show more X-men vs. Avengers. It'll probably come into play later, but it still feels really out of place.

One aside that sure didn't feel wrong was a cutaway to a very familiar orphanage. Anybody who is familiar with Cyclops's background will recognize the orphanage as the one he grew up in before he met the X-men. Well here a few new kids are shown playing around as young orphans tend to do. But the real hint comes from the closet, which seem to be the origin of all great fears for young children. Only this time it's not without merit. The distinct outline of Mr. Sinister shows up and that offers a slim ray of hope in a series that hasn't had many. Sinister hasn't shown up continuity wise since Inferno and he may be very interested to find out that Nathan is still alive, Scott and Jean are on the rocks, and Jean is falling in love with anybody and anything that puts a hand on her shoulder.

As a reader, I almost wish Sinister would kidnap and brain-wash Jean Grey so he can finally knock some sense into her. She's been a total fuck-up since the first panel of the first page of this whole fucking series and it's so sickening it's brought down every other major plot. Sinister would completely redeem himself if he just gets Jean to forget completely about the bullshit she pulled with Logan and Beast because she's already set herself up to be the most sadistic, unforgiving, and downright cruel bitch of this whole series and that's just an insult to anybody who ever liked X-men before Claremont tried to fix it. Make it happen, Sinny! You know you wanna!

The fight with the Avengers finally comes back and picks up again. It's understandably looking pretty shitty for the X-men. The Avengers have vengeance and the added advantage of being more pissed off on their side so it becomes painfully apparent they aren't going to win. Cyclops figures this out at least a few panels later than he should have and tries to hatch a plan. He does so with Jean (who has done jack shit to this point and that's probably a good thing) and they put it into action.

At this point Claremont starts playing with the perceptions of the readers and the Avengers. In a scene full of shock potential, Thor throws a few thunderbolts astray and they hit Lil Ro. It looks like the blow is lethal because she looks about as dead as Mark Sanford's political career.

The Avengers are visibly upset. They're supposed to be heroes and they're killing kids? That shit may work in Rawanda and the Congo, but not in the Westchester of the Marvel Universe. But for a comic like this, do you really think Claremont would resort to kid killing? Of course not. He's not very subtle about it either. You would expect the Avengers to react a lot more harshly because they weren't sent to kill anyone. They were supposed to bring the X-men in. It's a missed opportunity to throw a little emotion into the mix and like so many others in X-men Forever, the opportunity is squandered.

None of the readers should be surprised when they find out that Lil Ro is perfectly fine and so are the rest of the X-men. While the Avengers are busy scratching their heads and shitting their pants, they're retreating back into the mansion. When the Avengers finally figure out they've been mind fucked, they go after them. However, they don't get very far because as soon as the X-men disappear into the mansion the entire place explodes. There's no need for subtlety here. The Xavier Institute just fucking blows up.

It's a pretty awesome moment. It would have been even more awesome if it weren't so damn cliched by now. It wasn't long ago that the mansion exploded in the regular comics so it really isn't too big a shocker that it explodes here. If Forever is supposed to set itself apart from 616, it's doing a piss poor job. Even so, it still ends the issue on an exciting note. It was probably the only way to get away from the Avengers. They had to make it look like they blew up. Now they're on the run. Claremont tries to tease that this is the end of the X-men, but anybody who has ever read an X-men comic before should know better. They'll be back and this whole plotline of being on the Avenger's shit-list will continue.

So where does that leave this book? Overall, it's a decent issue. But since it is a first issue of a new volume, the standards are a little higher and Claremont fell plenty short here. It doesn't feel like the beginning of anything. It feels as though it could have just been issue 25 of the first series. Usually when a first issue is launched it signals something bigger and better. The mansion blowing up is admittedly big, but it's been done to death already. It just doesn't feel like a natural flow for the series and by and large, it's too mediocre to carry the monocle of being a #1. That doesn't make it as big a disappointment as many other Forever issues. Like Giant Sized before it, the success of every Forever issue seems to be gauged by how little it fucks up. This issue didn't fuck anything else up any worse than it already has been and that's a pretty lousy state for a book to be in. Issue one had a chance to redeem some of that and some seeds have been planted. It remains to be seen if they'll redeem the bullshit Claremont has shoveled onto this title, but there's still a chance.

For a kick-ass fight scene and some decent enough hints for future issues, the first issue of this new volume gets a 3 out of 5. It's only slightly better than Giant Sized and it still has many holes to fill. But there is still time and Chris Claremont is a good enough writer to do so. It just doesn't seem very likely. If it does then stick your head out the window because the apocalypse is probably underway. Nuff said.

Pretty Kitty Variant for Uncanny 522

I usually don't care much for variant covers, but ever so often one comes along that just puts a smile on my face. It's not every day you find awesome in your favorite comics. Most of the time your underwhelmed. Sometimes you're even disappointed. But there will always be those special moments when you see something that just makes you glad to be a fanboy. This is one of them! Uncanny 522 is set to bring Kitty Pryde back into the fold and she's already looking good for her return. Riding a bullet in a skin-tight outfit is awesome on so many levels. Thank you Marvel! I don't always give you enough credit, but you know how to give the fans something to be excited about!

Uncanny 522 Cover Mystery

So every comic forum is abuzz with the revelation of the new cover for Uncanny X-men 522. It's an issue Matt Fraction himself touts as a huge issue. But the biggest draw is the mystery woman blacked out on the cover. Who could it be? What could it mean?

A lot of people are speculating/hoping that it's Jean Grey. She's been gone in the comics a long time and she's always been a huge draw. Bringing her back for Second Coming is sure to add to the growing hype surrounding the event. But is it really her?

Personally, I think this is another tease. Marvel has done this before. They're not above doing it again. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. By adding mystery and hype, they increase sales even if it does tick off Jean Grey fans (a much maligned group if ever there was one). If the mystery woman is anyone, it's either Kitty Pryde or the Scarlet Witch. I'm leaning more towards the Scarlet Witch since Magneto is on Utopia right now and she has such a strong connection with House of M. It seems fitting. But I could be wrong. Only time will tell!

I would love to see Jean Grey return, but knowing Marvel that's a long shot at best.
